The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies will square off tonight in what the public may perceive as a pitcher’s duel. The Braves will turn to RHP Spencer Strider (7-2), whose 4.12 ERA isn’t nearly as impressive as his record, although his 3.25 xERA suggests he has gotten unlucky. The Phillies will start LHP Ranger Suarez (1-2), whose steady 3.82 ERA is a bit lower than his 4.15 xERA. Strider’s last start against Philadelphia saw him surrender only two earned runs across six innings pitched. Suarez surrendered zero earned runs across six innings pitched in his last start against Atlanta.

Although Suarez had a solid outing in his previous start against the Braves, we’ve also seen Atlanta get the best of him. Suarez made five starts against the Braves last season and recorded a 3.21 ERA through 28 innings pitched. Nine of those earned runs came in two games. In contrast, Strider made four appearances and three starts against the Phillies last season. He never allowed more than one earned run per contest and recorded a dominant 1.27 ERA across 21.1 innings pitched. Strider is averaging 14.2 K/9 against the Phillies over the last two years.

The Braves should get the best of Suarez tonight, and one player who should help them do so is shortstop Orlando Arcia. Atlanta’s already-strong team OPS of .818 improves to .903 when they face left-handed pitching. More importantly, Arcia has one hit in three at-bats against Suarez with four walks, good for an OBP of 71.4%. Because lives at the bottom of Atlanta’s batting order (Arcia usually hits ninth against LHP), he could easily get sent home by Ronald Acuna Jr. or Matt Olson. Let’s pair Arcia to record a run with Atlanta to win the first five innings for a same-game parlay with odds of +268 (27.2%) via FanDuel.
