Wednesday baseball is upon us which means plenty of afternoon games to get our sweat started early. September is around the corner when the NFL takes over, but there are still big opportunities on the diamond to find some value. We’ve seen in recent weeks teams start to either solidify their postseason position or look to brighter days in 2024. One game that features two teams in massively different directions is out west with the A’s and Mariners linking up. If you’ve seen these teams this year, then you know that Seattle is rightfully a sizable favorite at home in this spot. They sit around -275 to win this game at most books which is too rich for me, but the -1.5 Run Line is still appealing at -125. I expect this number to rise throughout the day, but diving into the numbers it’s clear Seattle is the spot I want to attack.
Seattle is a quality 75-57 team who actually dropped a game to this A’s team last night. They are 38-29 at home, bring a quality arm to the mound in Bryce Miller, and have real things to play for late in the season. The total in the game being 8.5 is probably the most concerning factor, as we need some offense quickly to cover this number. Other than that, Seattle has the advantage in every area, and they should show that this afternoon.
On the other side we have the A’s who are an abysmal 39-94 on the season. It’s a historically bad team, and although they pop up for a win or two at times, it’s been consistent losing from the start. They bring a pseudo relief pitcher to the mound in Zach Neal, who we haven’t seen much this season. What we do know is I see almost no way he pitches deep into the game so the Mariners bats should get chances against the Athletics bullpen. Regardless of who’s on the mound I don’t see much to worry about as a Mariners backer.
It doesn’t take much research to figure out the Mariners are obviously the favorite in this spot, but figuring out if the line has value, is the important part. I don’t want much to do with a -275 favorite, but finding a -125 on the run line was a spot I had interest in. Most books have moved to -135 and I expect that to continue to rise as we get closer to first pitch. I’ll back Seattle to respond off a sloppy effort last night and win this one going away.
