What an incredible way to lose a NRFI. It was virtually a replay of the night before. Really cool of Jake Irvin to drop that comebacker … TWICE. Unreal. Sometimes, you can’t make this stuff up. Baseball betting in a nutshell. However, we did cash the Mariners-Mets NRFI — there was never a doubt on this one.
We’re moving on as we have a pretty nice slate of Saturday games in terms of YRFI/NRFI bets. As always, I’ve got a pair of no run first inning picks today, but I’ve got a third one I really like so far.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics First Inning Bet
The Angels’ first-inning offense has fallen off as of late. Obviously, no Mike Trout for an extended period of time will do that, but outside of Shohei Ohtani, there’s no bat that really scares me. That’s a plus for A’s starter Paul Blackburn, who we’re going to be putting some trust in today.
Wanna win a bar bet? Ask someone how many times Paul Blackburn has cashed a NRFI (actually, don’t do that, people won’t know what a Paul Blackburn is). But, for the sake of this article, we’re going with it. Answer? 12. Blackburn is 12-3 on NRFI chances this year, and this looks like another good spot. The Angels are inside the Top 15 of teams that strikeout the most, and the Oakland righty is right a strikeout per inning. Just navigate around Ohtani, and this should be a nice spot.
I’d be doing everyone a disservice if I sat here and tried to convince you Griffin Canning was a good pitcher. He’s … not. But, in this instance, he doesn’t HAVE TO be. Oakland is a bottom-10 first-inning offense, and it doesn’t look like things will change much heading toward the and of the season. Canning’s been serviceable in 2023, going 10-7 in his NRFI opportunities, but he has cashed three straight no run first innings. Small sample alert: In 20 ABs against Canning, the A’s have only 3 hits and 7 Ks.
I like this spot.

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox First Inning Bet
This is, what I like to call, a battle of the bads. And, yes, both of these teams might be awful, but we can still profit off them.
Let’s make this quick.
These two offenses have been absolutely abysmal in terms of first-inning production. The White Sox and Tigers re 25th and 26th, respectively, in runs scored per first inning. So, they’re not generating much of anything, other than a lot of zeros.
Reese Olson hasn’t been a world-beater with his 7-6 record on NRFI chances, but he’s cashed the no run first inning in each of his last two starts (and he’s 1-0 on NRFIs against the White Sox this season).
Mike Clevinger has some surprisingly good NRFI numbers: 13-5 on no run first innings and is riding a three-game NRFI streak. He faced the Tigers once earlier this season and threw 5 shutout innings and allowed just 3 hits. In his career against the Tigers, Clevinger has held them to a .229 average and has given up only one home run.
Neither offense scares me here. Let’s get six quick outs and call it good.
