As has been the case with every shot we’ve taken at hitting a grand slam, we have two avenues to take: Taking someone with the best chance of hitting a home run, or maintaining good betting strategy like always. Of course, here at OddsShopper we always recommend going with the latter — that means making bets that are most likely to positively impact your bankroll long term.
But we also want to give you a good pick if you choose to target the most likely home run hitter. We’ll start there.
Only one player on today’s MLB slate has better than a 20% chance of hitting a home run today: Adolis Garcia. OddsShopper has his home run percentage at 21% as he and the Rangers take on Dean Kremer. Kremer gives up decent power, allowing a 4.8% home run rate and a .197 ISO. But his numbers are also a lot better against righties hence Garcia’s expected win rate still being pretty modest for the No. 1 option on the board.
This bet is -EV, so it really only has value as a longshot swing at the Grand Slam Jackpot. Luckily, Garcia’s team is a good one to count on guys getting on base, and Garcia is hitting fifth — a good opportunity for baserunners ahead of him. Still, the -6.5% value is generally not what we’re going for.
The better play is Pete Alonso at an 18% chance of winning with +475 odds. We have Alonso’s home run true odds at +470 — so it’s a narrow window but an open one, nonetheless.
