The Matt Olson home run attention on Saturday is hardly a surprise. The first baseman had heavy shoes to fill when replacing Freddie Freeman in Atlanta last season, and he did not disappoint. The big lefty slashed .240/.325/.477 with 34 home runs and 103 RBIs.
“It’s not easy to undergo a lot of newness in his life and in his career right now. I think it probably just happened in a good time in his career, he’s been an established major leaguer and it’s not an east position. Although Olson put up great power numbers in 2022, he is certainly looking to improve this season and should have an advantage now that the extreme shift has been outlawed. Of course, the easiest way for a player with Olson’s skill-set to get past a shift is to hit the ball over the wall. And he has done that at an elite clip throughout his entire career.
