The Dodgers didn’t make a huge splash at this year’s trade deadline, but they did make a number of moves to shore up some of their weak spots. They acquired starter Lance Lynn and reliever Joe Kelly from the Chicago White Sox and added swingman Ryan Yarbrough from the Kansas City Royals. The Dodgers also added shortstop Amed Rosario from the Cleveland Guardians and infielder Enrique Hernandez of the Boston Red Sox. The latter is returning after spending 2015 to 2020 with the Dodgers.
Those additions will bolster an already elite roster led by stars like Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. The Dodgers pitching has been spotty, with the team relying on rookies Bobby Miller and Michael Grove to eat up large numbers of innings in their starting rotation. However, the squad has shined offensively. Will Smith has become one of the best, if not the best, hitting catchers in Major League Baseball to go along with the surprising play of rookie James Outman and the re-emergence of veterans David Peralta and Jason Heyward.
Many of the aforementioned names are new to the Dodgers, joining newcomer J.D. Martinez and long-time Dodger Max Muncy to round out one of the strongest lineups in baseball. In addition to Muncy, one of the longest-tenured Dodgers helping the team in their first-place run is Chris Taylor. The valuable utility man has been with the organization since 2016 when he was acquired from the Seattle Mariners. Taylor is only hitting .212 in 222 at-bats this season, but he has 12 home runs, which is his best pace of his career.
He does most of his damage against left-handed pitching, which is a good thing for Taylor and the Dodgers since Rich Hill will be on the mound tonight in San Diego. Hill is a crafty veteran that has been on more teams and for more years than almost any player in baseball. The Padres brought him over from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline to be a steady presence as they look to turn things around and meet some of the high expectations they had coming into the year.
Despite Hill’s aptitude, Taylor is in a good spot for a home run in this game. Most important is the pricing on his MLB home run prop. You can grab Taylor to hit a dinger on Sunday Night Baseball for +600 at FanDuel. This Dodgers-Padres bet has true odds of +576 and a 17% win rate. That gives it a 4% positive expected value, but since it doesn’t hit often, you won’t want to stake too much on this one. It’s worth laying about 0.15% to 0.2% of your bank roll using the Kelly Criterion for sustainable growth.
