Justin Verlander Injury News: Pitcher to Return Soon?

Verlander began the year on the IL with a low-grade strain in his shoulder, but the injury was not expected to keep him sidelined for too long. It caused some concern in Queens when the Mets sent Verlander in for an MRI Wednesday. But luckily for all those fans who were thinking the worst, the team announced that the MRIs showed the inflammation in the shoulder has diminished.

Not having a timetable for a Verlander return is far from ideal. But Wednesday’s injury news is positive, no less. With Verlander and Jose Quintana beginning the season on the IL, the Mets have been forced to move left-hander David Peterson to the front of the rotation, with Tylor Megill also being inserted into the starting rotation.

The product through seven games has been… not great. The Mets rotation has been an Achilles heel thus far, with Peterson being the latest starter to struggle on Wednesday. The left-hander was chased by the Milwaukee Brewers after just 4.0 innings, allowing five earned runs. The Brewers would complete the three-game sweep over the Mets with a walk-off home run by Garrett Mitchell in the bottom of the ninth.

To add to the panic, New York has also gotten uncharacteristic performances from co-ace Max Scherzer through his first two starts of the season. After a clunker against the Brewers on Tuesday, Scherzer now sports a 6.35 ERA in the early going.

Still, it is way too early for the Mets faithful to push the panic button. And there is no need to rush Verlander back into duty earlier than planned. Per DraftKings Sportsbook, the Mets (+850) are still among the top favorites to win the World Series despite the less-than-ideal start to their season. They are behind just the Braves (+700) and Astros (+700)

The Justin Verlander injury news on Wednesday indicates we should be seeing him back in the rotation before too long. And as we continue to track for more updates, bettors should check out OddsShopper tools to find the best MLB value for the remainder of the season!
