Joey Logano Daytona 500 Bettors Lament Bad Beat After Caution Ends Race

Joey Logano entered Sunday’s Daytona 500 race as one of the favorites to win the “Great American Race.” He was right up at the top with a chance to pull it out before a wild finish. A massive wreck ensued with the driver’s aggressively jockeying for position during the second overtime, effectively ending the race with Logano, Christopher Bell and Rickey Stenhouse Jr. all close to the lead. NASCAR ruled that Stenhouse Jr. was slightly ahead when the caution flag came out, making him the Daytona 500 winner.

Joey Logano Bettors Suffer Daytona 500 Bad Beat

Joey Logano bettors are claiming he was out in front when the crash occurred, but once the caution was ruled, it was Stenhouse Jr. who re-claimed the lead and was able to win his first Daytona 500. Logano finished in second place.

“Second’s the worst. You’re so close and leading the white flag lap there… If I went to the bottom my car didn’t handle good. I thought if I went down there I’d get wrecked,” Logano said after the race during his TV interview.

Logano came in at 12-1 to win the event and had the third most bets wagered on him to win the Daytona 500 (6.4% at BetMGM). Stenhouse Jr. was a heavy 30-1 underdog, with very few bettors taking a chance on him bringing home the checkered flag.

The big wreck on the final lap came after a crash forced a second overtime just moments before. The 212 laps ran made it the longest Daytona 500 race ever.

It was Stenhouse’s first victory since 2017, which also marked the last time that he qualified for the playoffs.

While Joey Logano bettors will be reeling from the Daytona 500 bad beat, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will be celebrating his first triumph in a long time, kicking off the 2023 NASCAR season in style.
