Anthony Davis Injury Update: Is Los Angeles’ Star Playing Tonight?
Anthony Davis Injury Update
Los Angeles Lakers fans had yet another injury scare on Monday: power forward Anthony Davis left their game against the Miami Heat with a hip injury. He headed to the locker room and failed to play at all in the fourth quarter. Davis tallied just nine points, six rebounds, four assists and one block in the loss with a box plus-minus of -9. Davis is now questionable for Wednesday’s action.
Davis initially expressed confidence he would play on Monday, but that didn’t him from picking up a questionable tag. “I expect to be 100%, I’m definitely going to play Wednesday,” Davis said on Monday, per NBA Insider Shams Charania, but Tuesday’s injury report paints a different picture with him listed as questionable. I am not taking Davis at his word and suspect there is a real risk he misses Wednesday’s action.
Is Anthony Davis Playing for Los Angeles Tonight?
I rarely think a player’s own assessment of their injury — especially right after it happens — carries much weight, no matter how high-profile of a player they are. There are a number of reasons I believe this — for one, a player isn’t the one signing their own paychecks; for another, a player’s assessment of their pain is usually tainted by post-injury adrenaline. As such, I think there is a real chance Davis sits tonight.
The Los Angeles Lakers are trading as a 2.5-point road favorite over the Houston Rockets at bet365 tonight. The books have some Anthony Davis player prop markets available, with his points prop set to 25.5 and his rebounds prop set to 11.5. If Davis can’t go, Christian Wood, whose player props are not available, is likely to enter the starting five. LeBron James would likely see his usage rate tick up as well.
If you’re looking to get some speculative action down and hope that Davis sits or is limited, I recommend backing James to go over his points prop, which is set to just 25.5 at bet365. James is averaging 25.3 points per game this year, and he recorded 30 against the Heat when Davis exited early.
James will face primary defensive coverage from Dillon Brooks, who antagonized him again ahead of this game. I’m not a big narrative-based bettor, but if Davis is out and Brooks is the one assigned to James, we could see some offensive fireworks out of future Hall of Famer.
