Since his return from injury, Brandon Ingram ranks fourth among the NBA’s starters in usage rate (35.4%). He trails only Luka Doncic, Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Although Ingram has done plenty of scoring, he has also committed plenty of turnovers — he is averaging 4.2 turnovers per game through the stretch in question.
Ingram’s inefficient play will cost him against the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight. Although the Cavaliers play at the NBA’s slowest pace, they force the 10th-most turnovers per game (15) and the second-most from opposing small forwards (2.7). Cleveland’s aggressive defensive play led the team to force three turnovers from Bojan Bogdanovic, three from Deni Avdija, three from Buddy Hield and two from Jimmy Butler in recent games. All four of those players have much lower usage rates than Ingram.

Although Ingram has struggled with turnovers recently, the problem extends to the start of the year. Ingram has averaged 3.2 turnovers per game this season and has turned the ball over at least three times in 12 of his 21 appearances. His only times staying under this number came before the injury to Zion Williamson. The Pelicans trust Ingram for better or worse, but that may not produce a favorable outcome against the Cavaliers.
