The Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic both have their backs against the wall this year. Both franchises will need consecutive wins to score a spot in the play-in tournament. Although the Magic didn’t get aggressive at the trade deadline, the Raptors shipped off a first-round pick, two second-round picks and Khem Birch to San Antonio for center Jakob Poeltl. Look for them to step on the gas as the playoffs approach.
Toronto’s positionless lineup will get a bit more coherent with the addition of Poeltl, a true five. The Raptors opted to use a VanVleet-Barnes-Achiuwa-Siakam-Poeltl lineup in their last time out, although that came with both Gary Trent Jr. and OG Anunoby sidelined. Trent and Achiuwa are both questionable tonight, but even if they both play, the addition of Poeltl should keep Siakam at wing and away from center, where he has spent 73% of his minutes this year.

Keeping Siakam away from the five spot should help him dish out more assists. Siakam is averaging 11.2 potential assists per game this year, trailing only VanVleet (12.7) on Toronto’s roster. However, Siakam has averaged 11.5 potential assists per game through Toronto’s last two games, more than VanVleet (9), both of which came with Poeltl at center. Siakam was already averaging 6.1 assists per game and could see that number tick up down the stretch.
The matchup falls right into Siakam’s hands as well. He has averaged exactly eight assists per game across three matchups with the Magic. He finished with assist totals of 10, 7 and 7. Further, the Magic have allowed an extra assist per game when playing without rest.
