The Detroit Pistons landed a solid center in last year’s draft with the Jalen Duren pick. But while Duren is a respectable rebounder and decent interior scorer, he doesn’t do much else. He leads the team in shots made from within the restricted area per game (3) but rarely shoots from elsewhere, and when he does, his shots don’t often fall. The matchup against Cleveland’s excellent frontcourt bodes poorly for him.
The Cavaliers have controlled the interior this year. They have allowed the third-fewest points per game to opposing centers this season (20) and the second-fewest through the last 15 games (18.7). Recently, they have held the Clippers’ Ivica Zubac and the Knicks’ Jericho Sims to two-point outings. Duren scored only one point in his first appearance against Cleveland after shooting 0-for-3 from the field.

Duren’s limited offensive skillset and low usage rate will prevent him from doing much damage tonight. He ranks fifth among Detroit’s starters in usage (12.3%) and has scored eight points or fewer in 26 of his 47 appearances. It doesn’t help that the Cavaliers play at the NBA’s slowest pace and may opt to run a bigger lineup should Mitchell or Garland have to sit.
The books have left Duren’s scoring props a point too high for tonight’s difficult matchup. The rookie big man should struggle in this spot, especially since the Pistons are on the road.
