Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich cultivates a culture of intelligent basketball play. Despite having a roster full of young and developing players, the Spurs ranked respectably in blocked shots allowed per game. However, with injuries and trades depleting the team’s roster, that trend has begun to change — and Pistons center Jalen Duren stands to benefit.
Recent box scores haven’t been friendly to the Spurs. They have allowed the sixth-most blocks per game to centers over the last seven games (2.8). They have also allowed the sixth-most blocks to all positions over the last three (5.3). Lowlights include Precious Achiuwa and Chris Boucher combining for five blocks, Nikola Vucevic and Domantas Sabonis both getting a pair and Kristaps Porzingis racking up a season-high performance with five.

Duren wasn’t the most aggressive defender early in the year, but he has started to play more aggressively. He averaged 0.8 blocks per game before entering Detroit’s starting lineup in early December, and after that move, he averaged a lowly 0.5 blocks per game until an ankle injury cost him five starts. Since his return to the lineup in mid-January, Duren has averaged an impressive 1.6 blocks per game.
The books haven’t adjusted for Duren’s recent uptick in defensive production. DraftKings Sportsbook has this line set to a fair number (1.5) but with the juice stacked on the under.
