NBA Summer League Bets & Picks: Victor Wembanyama’s Big Debut
San Antonio Spurs-Charlotte Hornets NBA Summer League Odds
Odds via FanDuel Sportsbook
Spurs: -290 | Hornets: +225
Spurs -6.5 -110 | Hornets +6.5 -110
Over 184.5: -108 | Under 184.5: -112
It’s the matchup we’ve all been waiting for: No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama will take on No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller in tonight’s NBA Summer League action. The game may not mean anything, but it’s sold out. The San Antonio Spurs are sizeable favorites over the Hornets with Wemby in the lineup, and they just torched the Hornets by 19 points on Monday without him.
Will Wembanyama make a splash early? It’s possible — we’ve seen a high-scoring Summer League so far. One of San Antonio’s wings, Julian Champagnie, has been going off for 29 points per game through two contests. The Spurs have had two players record 20-plus points in each game: Champagnie twice, Malaki Branham once and Dominick Barlow once.
The Hornets have looked incredibly disorganized during Summer League play, and a lot of the blame falls on Miller. The rookie wing scored 18 on Monday but only six on Wednesday. He has already racked up 13 fouls and nine turnovers. Rookie guard Nick Smith Jr. actually leads Charlotte in scoring to this point, not Miller.
Charlotte’s lack of discipline and poor rebounding have allowed opposing teams to rack up tons of points. The Hornets are averaging 26.5 fouls per game. They are also giving up an average of 14.5 offensive rebounds per contest. That spells trouble against the 7-foot-5 Wembanyama, who should be able to snag boards and get to the charity stripe with ease.
Let’s target Wembanyama on the NBA Summer League player prop markets tonight. Although plenty of uncertainty surrounds his workload, the Spurs took things carefully by holding him out of their first two games. Wembanyama will now have been off since mid-June, so he enters tonight’s game fresh.
With the Charlotte Hornets struggling early, backing Wembanyama for a big performance in his debut should prove sharp. Wembanyama scored 20-plus points in 25 of his 44 (56.8%) starts for Boulogne-Levallois this year while averaging 20.9 per game. but we can buy him at +122 (45.1%) via FanDuel Sportsbook to cross the 20-point threshold tonight.
