Warriors Road Trip Starts in Pursuit of History, With NBA Attendance Record at Spurs on Friday

The Golden State Warriors start a five-game road trip Friday, which is really bad news for the Golden State Warriors, who are on an NBA-record pace for one of the worst road seasons in history. But this Warriors road trip will be unlike any other, with an NBA attendance record and a visit to the White House all part of the eight-day excursion.

The Warriors head out with a 3-16 record away from home so far this season. Compared to their 17-5 home record, the difference in home/road winning percentage would be the third-worst in NBA history, if it continues, according to The Mercury News.

“We have to play desperate on the road to beat the teams that are coming up on the schedule, and again, rectify the way that we’ve been playing throughout the season on the road,” guard Steph Curry told the newspaper in remarks published Thursday.

The trip opens in historic fashion Friday with a game against the San Antonio Spurs to be held at the Alamodome in an attempt to break the NBA regular-season single-game attendance record.

As of Wednesday, the Spurs said they had sold 63,592 tickets for the game, which would be enough to break the record of 62,046, set March 27, 1998 when the Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls played the Atlanta Hawks at the Georgia Dome.

The all-time NBA record is 108,713 for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game, which was played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, according to CBS Sports.

The Spurs played all of their home games at the Alamodome from 1993-2002, with a record attendance of 39,554 on June 18, 1999 for Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.

The game begins a stretch of five in eight days, including at the Chicago Bulls on Sunday, at the Washington Wizards on Monday, at the Boston Celtics on Thursday and at the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. The Warriors will visit the White House on Tuesday to be honored for their 2021-22 NBA championship.

“Excited about just the celebration of what we did last year,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area. “It’s kind of like the one last moment to reflect on the accomplishment.”

Last season, the Warriors were 22-19 on the road, and they have not been under .500 away from home in a full 82-game season since 2012-13 (19-22).

This season, the Warriors are next to last in the NBA in defensive rating on the road (120.1) but are fourth at home (107.8). On offense, they are 19th on the road (112.3) and 20th at home (110.4).

“The margin for error that you have at home, you don’t have near that margin of error when you’re on the road,” Warriors forward Draymond Green told NBC Sports Bay Area. “And I personally don’t think we’ve adjusted to that well throughout the season.”

The Warriors have ruled out Jonathan Kuminga (foot), James Wiseman (ankle) and JaMychal Green (infection) for Friday but each is rejoining practices and could play on the trip.

The Golden State Warriors (20-21) are eighth in the Western Conference. They have a difference in home/road winning percentage of .615.
