College Baseball World Series 2023 Betting Odds & Picks Today: LSU-Wake Forest

Bracket 1: LSU (-180) vs. Wake Forest | Thursday, June 22 at 7 p.m. ET

It’s the game we’ve all been waiting for — RHP Paul Skenes (13-2), LSU’s ace, will take on RHP Rhett Lowder (14-0), Wake Forest’s ace. Both pitchers own sub-2.00 ERAs, with Skenes (1.81) slightly edging Lowder (1.99). Lowder made it 5.1 innings with 100 pitches and recorded a 3.53 ERA on Saturday. Skenes went 7.2 innings with 123 pitches and recorded a 1.60 ERA.

Although neither pitcher got a full week off before this game, they have both received enough rest to warrant the lofty expectations implied by both the total and moneyline markets. LSU, a sizeable underdog yesterday, is now a hefty favorite because Skenes will take the mound. The total sits as low as eight at some sportsbooks.

But is it efficient for the books to favor LSU so heavily? Although Skenes is a great pitcher, he does have two losses this year, and he’ll take on the best team in college baseball. Wake Forest has gone 24-7 against the RPI’s top 50 teams this season; LSU has gone 25-14. Lowder isn’t quite as good as Skenes, but he has thrown 23 fewer pitches in Omaha, and Wake has a better-rested bullpen.

The betting public is obsessed with Skenes. He’s a great pitcher, but Wake came into the tournament as the top seed for a reason. Give me the Deacs at +150 (40%) or better for a half unit. We can find the best price for the moneyline at +165 (37.7%) via Caesars Sportsbook, but that number won’t be around forever. If you haven’t signed up at Caesars, you can get your first bet on the house up to $1,250! Check the sportsbook widget above for more details and disclaimers.

The Wake Forest moneyline isn’t my top pick for today’s game. Unfortunately, my top pick is no longer on the board. You could’ve bought the under 11.5 runs at -128 (56.1%) via FanDuel Sportsbook as late as 9:30 a.m. ET. FanDuel is no longer taking action on the total, which is now trading between 8 and 9 across the market. While it’s too late to get this number now, members of OddsShopper Insider Access got it in time. Do with that information what you will.
