UNC NCAA Tournament Odds: Are Tar Heels Going to be Left Out?

Are the UNC Tar Heels going to be left out of the NCAA Tournament? The Tar Heels (20-13) came into the ACC Tournament needing to make a statement to ensure a spot in the March Madness tournament. They were able to notch a dominant win over a lowly Boston College team in the opening round but they could not keep the momentum going. After losing to Virginia on Thursday, the UNC NCAA Tournament odds show they may not hear their name called on Selection Sunday.

UNC NCAA Tournament Odds: Tar Heels on Outside Looking In?

Per DraftKings Sportsbook, the Tar Heels’ odds to win the 2023 NCAA Tournament sit at +20000. That line puts them near Villanova, VCU and FAU — all teams projected to miss out on the NCAA Tournament. ESPN’s bracket expert Joe Lunardi had North Carolina among his “first four out” of the NCAA Tournament prior to the loss to Virginia.

The Tar Heels stuck with Virginia for most of the game on Thursday, but could not find the bottom f the net down the stretch, eventually losing 68-59.

UNC guard R.J. Davis tried putting the team on his back, scoring 24 of the team’s 59 points. The only other player to score over 10 was Caleb Love, who scored 11. Star big man Armando Bacot was clearly hampered by an ankle injury suffered during Wednesday’s win.

The Tar Heels would become the first team ever to be selected preseason No. 1 ranking and miss the NCAA Tournament. UNC head coach Hubert Davis was asked after the game if he would be accepting a bid into the NIT Tournament if the opportunity presents itself.

“I’m not thinking about that at all right now. I’m just thinking about them and this team,” he said in his post-game press conference.

For the Tar Heels, the entire season has been a major letdown after coming in with clear aspirations for a national title after coming up just short last season. Based on the latest UNC NCAA Tournament odds, the Tar Heels will likely miss out on this year’s tournament, which would set up a longggg offseason in Chapel Hill for the entire program and its fan base.
