Arch Manning-Quinn Ewers Quarterback Competition: Who Has the Leg Up

Texas fans are chomping at the bit to see Manning take over the quarterback position, but they might have to wait a little bit. Manning looked like a true freshman in the spring game, completing just 5 of 13 passes for 30 yards in the air.

“He’s a college kid, and I think so many times you see the Manning name and think he’s perfect and nothing is wrong with him,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said, per Sporting News. “I’m not saying there is anything wrong with him, but he’s still a kid. What he has that is somewhere in the Manning DNA is that he loves football

“He works at his craft and he wants to be great,” Sarkisian said. “I think that’s why he came here. We’ve had a good track record of developing quarterbacks over the last 20 years.”

Ewers, on the other hand, was efficient in the spring game. He completed 16 of his 23 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown as his team cruised to a 21-10 win. Ewers struggled at times throughout the 2022 season, completing 58.1% of passes for 2,177 yards,  15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Per DraftKings Sportsbook, Ewers is +2000 to win the Heisman Trophy, while Manning has fallen off the board following his uninspiring performance Saturday. Sarkisian even admitted after the spring gam that Ewers has the inside track to win the quarterback job.

“I think it’s pretty clear to say, Quinn is our starting quarterback,” Sark told beat writer Chris Hummer.

The Quinn Eres-Arch Manning quarterback competition is just about over, and all signs point to Texas going with Ewers to open the season. The latest odds would also indicate that sportsbooks are confident it is only a matter of time before Ewers is named the QB1.
