College Football Week 4 Parlay: Auburn-Texas A&M & More (September 23)

We are back for a jam-packed week of college football, including a nice two-leg CFB parlay. There are just dogs barking in this week’s column, as the value jumps off the page for a couple of teams — one a home dog in a fantastic position to upset the visitor. Taking two dogs to win outright and combining them in a parlay will yield a better reward than stacking up a bunch of heavy favorites, just to get a similar or lesser number. Nothing is guaranteed in college football, as we will see this week in College Station, Texas.

Week 4 Parlay Pick: Auburn-Texas A&M

The criteria may change each week to determine the best underdog, or any pick, for the parlay — but this one is all about coaching. Auburn jumped out to a 3-0 record under Hugh Freeze, who also finds himself a staunch 28-11 against the spread as a dog. That number becomes even stronger — 15-3 — when getting 7 or fewer points. Freeze is a master motivator and has found something early with his Tigers. Samford found out how dangerous Auburn’s dual quarterbacks can be, especially when Payton Thorne can run. Robby Ashford normally holds that role, but both quarterbacks are dangerous enough with the ball in their hands to cause some problems for the Aggies. Freeze will have to coach around a couple of injuries outside of the quarterback position, but that’s nothing new for a coach who loves this spot, especially on the road.

Texas A&M also rolled a couple of cupcakes but is still haunted by that loss earlier to Miami. The Aggies are probably still reeling from that loss last year at Auburn, but don’t expect revenge in the air. Maybe it’s the ingredients, lack of salt or too much seasoning, but home cooking for Texas A&M has been a disaster. The squad is just 7-11 straight up in conference home openers — including 1-6 against the spread when it comes off a win of 13-plus points. This is a spot where one coach thrives and the other team routinely struggles. Take Auburn outright.

Week 4 Parlay Pick: Washington State — Oregon State

While the coaching was a major point of emphasis in the above play, this one focuses on the two quarterbacks. Oregon State is still asking questions on whether or not D.J. Uiagalelei can be the guy under center. Box score numbers aside, the Beavers quarterback hasn’t looked great on the field despite them coming in as the 14th-ranked team in the country. Washington State is led by Cam Ward, who has yet to throw an interception alongside his nine touchdown passes. The Beavers watched the Uiagalelei get picked twice and basically hand a huge chunk of his passing yards off to a screen play. The Cougars are 5-1 over their last six games playing a third straight home game, and they have that same record against the spread in their last six as home dogs. This contest has more too, including a revenge game from last time they squared off, as Washington State enters this game averaging over 520 yards per game on offense. The Beavers are already dealing with inconsistencies with the quarterback position and may be exhausted on defense by the third quarter.
