College Football Expert Picks for Week 5: We’re Going To Miami

We inch closer to a monster Saturday of action across multiple conferences. Week 5 looks to shape up with some top level matchups, highlighted by Georgia and Alabama but certainly not limited to the SEC. We get an early glimpse of college football with a couple of games on Friday night – a nice bridge between Thursday night NFL and Saturday CFB. The pair of games feature Miami hosting Virginia Tech and Washington crossing the country to battle Rutgers. Both home teams are undefeated so far on the season. Here are the top two plays for Friday night’s college action!

Nonetheless, with some model-based tools out of the way, which happened to help me turn around my profits in an insane way (read here!) as a heads up, let’s get to the games.

We’ll have the weekend covered, but these Week 3 college football expert picks are for Friday only.

Best Game: Virginia Tech – Miami | College Football Expert Picks Today

The first of the two games sees Miami continue their run to the post season. Their fifth straight win should come at the expense of the visiting Hokies. Currently a 17.5 point road dog, it’s going to take a ton for Virginia Tech just to stay in this football game. There are weather concerns around southern Florida but the accuweather predicts 85 and partly cloudy. This is setting up for a Hurricane but more so the version where Miami rolls over their opponent. The Hokies are plagued by their own slow starts and that should continue Friday night.

Virginia Tech has played behind for the most part this season, finding ways to come back but still fall short. The latest was a late Kyron Drones interception that killed all hopes at Rutgers. It’s been that kind of start for this team despite finding ways to win twice. It’s difficult to expect this team to work on those slow starts and turn it around against, of all teams, the best squad they face all year.

Instead, Cam Ward and the Canes are loaded and haven’t looked back since exposing Florida. Ward leads a tough aerial assault that Virginia Tech simply cannot slow down. The 17.5 looks attainable for Miami but every single trend would advise against it. You can start with VaTech being 7-0 ATS last 7 as a conference dog of 10+ points. Despite the absurd slow starts, Brent Pry’s Hokies have out performed each of their last three opponents inside the box score, just falling short with timely errors. Miami is 4-18 ATS coming off a win and facing a team off a loss, it dips to 1-15 ATS against teams with a .333 or worse winning percentage. This is a Mario Cristobal issue as much as it’s a player problem.

I’m not taking any chances with either of these teams. I can’t trust Virginia Tech to take advantage of any gifts handed to them by Miami, and the Hurricanes could limp their way to a 14 point victory. Instead, play the total – specifically under 54.5 points. Virginia Tech will customarily start slow while the Hurricanes slump their way to a Friday night snoozer.

We are up on the year in the VIP and just hit another live play for TNF. There is nothing better than catching a live line in my VIP Discord as we all cash another ticket. It’s only $25.95 for the month but take 50% off with code TOUCHDOWN.

Best College Football Expert Pick: Washington +105 at Rutgers

Washington has won 21 of their last 22 regular season games, Rutgers has not. The Huskies are getting points as they cross country to take on a still improving Scarlet Knights squad. At first glance, the Huskies have a steep climb coming up with Michigan next, then a few more Big Ten teams including at Penn State. This is the opposite of a look ahead game as Washington has no choice but to use this as a proper tune up before that tougher stretch.

Rutgers escaped a late push by Virginia Tech last week after a Hokies interception. That won’t be nearly as possible against Washington, who makes very few unforced errors. Rutgers hasn’t been “lucky” rather playing teams that simply are more mistake prone than the Huskies. That’s helped Rutgers survive to a perfect 4-0 record, probably helping to push this line making them the favorites. Meanwhile, Washington has tightened things up rather significantly since dropping an earlier game to Washington State.

The biggest area of improvement overall for Washington is on defense. This is a team coming off a championship game but looks noticeably better on defense. Rutgers won’t turn over Washington, nor do the Scarlet Knights have anything to wear down the opposing defense. I like the road dogs to win outright and enjoy that long trip home.
