EasyPost Hawaii Bowl Pick & Prediction
After starting the year 1-4, San Jose State rattled off six straight victories to close the 2023 regular season. Conversely, Coastal Carolina started the year hot before sputtering down the stretch after losing their starting quarterback. With more moving parts on the Coastal Carolina side, San Jose State enters this game as a ten point favorite.
Starting with the Trojans’ offense, San Jose State lost only offensive tackle Fernando Carmona. Veteran signal caller Chevan Cordeiro remains in place after completing 62% of his passes for 7.6 yards per attempts, 19 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. More importantly, San Jose State developed a strong rushing attack throughout the year, with Kairee Robinson and Quali Conley combining for 1,936 rushing yards and 41 receptions.
Coastal Carolina’s defense played well in coverage this year, but struggled mightily to defend the run. Overall, this unit ranked 108th in the country. Making matters worse, Coastal Carolina lost two front seven starters in edge Braylon Ryan and linebacker JT Killen to the transfer portal. Now facing a weakened Chanticleers’ defense, San Jose State should find success on the ground.
As for the Coastal Carolina offense, quarterbacks Grayson McCall and Jarrett Guest entered the transfer portal. This leaves third stringer Ethan Vasko to start this game. More of a runner, Vasko averages 6.9 yards percarry, but leaves much to be desired as a passer. Coastal Carolina also lost two of their top three receivers in Jared Brown and Tyson Mobley, leaving only Sam Pinckney as a proven receiver in the pass game. Because of this, look for Coastal Carolina to lean on the ground game in this matchup.
As for San Jose State’s defense, this unit ranked 128th in run defense this year. They did lose linebacker Elijah Wood to the transfer portal, but this unit can’t really regress any further. With that said, the Spartans did improve defensively throughout the year. They allowed 21 points or fewer in four of their final five games, albeit against weaker competition.
Ultimately, both teams should find success on the ground, but San Jose state simply has more ways to win this game after all of Coastal Carolina’s departures. A lot of the juice has already been squeezed out of this line, but San Jose State looks like the sharp side. For those weary of a side, an over could be interesting. Pace doesn’t point to an over, but both offenses have advantages over the corresponding defense.
