Quarterback prospect Stetson Bennett may not be the most talented quarterback in the NFL Draft. But after all the success he had with the Georgia Bulldogs for the past two years, the debate about when (or if) he would be selected has been a heavy talking point in the days leading up to this weekend’s draft. While Bennett had won back-to-back national championships at Georgia, it was far from a sure thing that he was going to get picked in the NFL Draft. Most of the money was on Bennett to get drafted given his status as one of the more popular players in college football over the past two years. He went from a walk-on to a bonafide star for the Bulldogs, coming up with clutch plays time and time again during his illustrious collegiate career.
The signal-caller improved in nearly every category during the 2022-23 season, throwing for 4,128 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
Bennett will now go to Los Angeles and have the chance to work with offensive guru Sean McVay, while also being mentored by veteran Matthew Stafford. Bennett admitted he did not meet with the Rams pre-draft, but he told ESPN after being selected that he is “excited to work with Coach McVay”.
Back in January, Bennett was in the news for the wrong reason when being arrested for public intoxication in Dallas. He quickly owned up to the mistake and vowed never to create distractions off the field in the future.
Despite this one instance, Bennett carries a reputation as a hard worker and solid leader, who also seems to have the ability to win. Clearly, McVay and the Rams’ brass saw enough upside in Bennett to take a chance on the QB earlier than anyone had expected.
