Wake Forest-Duke Pick & Prediction

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will make the short trip to visit the Duke Blue Devils on Thursday night. Duke is a sizeable favorite but will need to bounce back after suffering a 23-point shellacking by Louisville last week. The Blue Devils have fallen hard from their once-impressive AP Poll ranking, but I expect them to take out some of their frustrations against a lowly Wake Forest team.

Duke’s defense remains one of the best in the country. The Blue Devils rank 20th in expected points added (EPA) allowed per play and are coughing up only 16.1 points per game. Duke also ranks 20th in yards allowed per play (4.7). Importantly, we’ve seen Duke shut down multiple unranked opponents in Durham this season. They held Clemson to seven, FCS Lafayette to seven, Northwestern to 14 and NC State to three.

Wake Forest does not play effective offense. Quarterback Mitch Griffis ranks 75th in yards per pass attempt (7) and 84th in passing efficiency (125.6). Wake’s offense ranks a dismal 125th in EPA per play as well, largely because the unit ranks 130th in EPA per dropback. The Demon Deacons are scoring only 20.1 points per game and 17.3 per road game this year.

Wake Forest doesn’t have an offense capable of doing meaningful damage against Duke’s defense. The Fremeau Efficiency Index (FEI) projects Wake for only 11 points. Parker Fleming’s model projects Wake for only 13.8. Yet you can buy Wake to stay under a team total of 17.5 for -130 at DraftKings, which is an absolute steal. The Demon Deacons have gone over that number just once against an ACC opponent this year.

Wake Forest-Duke Week 10 Pick: Wake Forest Under 17.5 -130 at DraftKings
