Cam Rising Injury Update: Is Utah’s Quarterback Playing Friday? (Sept 29)

The No. 10 Utah Utes will visit the No. 19 Oregon State Beavers in Week 5. The status of their star quarterback remains in question. So is Cam Rising playing? Rising has been trending toward returning lately, but he is still yet to take the field. Let’s look at the most recent Cam Rising injury updates as we assess whether he will be available on Friday against Oregon State in Week 5.

UPDATE (9/27/23 at 11:22 a.m. ET): Kyle Whittingham has “no news to break” on Cam Rising’s status, per Portland’s 1080 The FAN, but “there’s still stuff to figure out medically.”

Cam Rising Injury Update: Is Utah’s Quarterback Playing Friday?

Cam Rising Injury Update

The No. 10 Utah Utes lost Cam Rising to a torn ACL in last year’s Rose Bowl. He has been steadily working his way back from the injury but is yet to take the field for the Utes. There was some optimism that Rising would be available for Week 4’s game against now-unranked UCLA, but it dissipated before kickoff.

Last week, head coach Kyle Whittingham said that Rising “looked good today” in his return to practice. However, news broke several weeks ago that Rising’s return to the field hinges not on Rising or Whittingham but on Rising’s surgeon.

“He practices as if he was … playing the game and ready to roll,” Whittingham said, “But until the doctor says it’s go time, we’ll just keep proceeding as we have.” So while we may hear more reports out of Utah that Rising is looking good in practice or in warmups, the ultimate decision falls elsewhere.

Is Cam Rising Playing for Utah Against Oregon State?

So is Cam Rising playing against Oregon State this Friday? We don’t know, and anything said definitively about his status should be taken with a grain of salt. We saw the market steam toward Utah with rumors of him playing in Week 4 — only for that steam to dispel as those rumors turned out to be false.

The betting markets appear somewhat skeptical of Rising’s status for Week 5. The Utes are trading as a 2.5-point underdog at FanDuel after opening at around 1.5. The Beavers just suffered a narrow road loss to the now-No. 16 Washington State Cougars, but they are an impressive 13-1 against the spread at home since 2021.
