Surprise, surprise — the biggest betting state in the union remained so in the last week of March. The New York State Gaming Commission announced a massive $41.9 million in gross revenue for sports betting the week of March 31, which was way up from the week before and kept New York as the No. 1 betting state in the U.S.
New York has nine sports betting operators, and their combined revenue increased their hold by 9.2% — which was up 3 percentage points from the prior week. Revenue also increased by a third. Every single operator also had positive adjusted gross revenue, and estimates place the tax revenue for New York in the neighborhood of $21 million.
With over $450 million in accepted bets during this week, New York has now passed the $400 million mark in 25 of the last 27 weeks.
New York already has the record for best month in terms of handle as the only state to exceed $2 billion in one month, which it did in November. That month saw $2.12 billion in handle for the Empire State. However, there is belief that New York may have beaten its own record in March, as weekly reports place March handle at $2.33 billion.
That does, however, include four days in February since it covers a five-week period.
Of course, the dominant force in this great stretch for New York was FanDuel, whose status as the king of U.S. sports betting is due in large part to its New York market. This week it bagged a $200 million handle for the second week in a row, the first sportsbook to do so, and that led to $21.4 million in revenue.
DraftKings did OK for itself, but it was still well behind at $153.9 million in handle and $12.7 for revenue. Caesars, Fanatics and BetMGM rounded out the top 5.
