Skylar Thompson to Start for Dolphins, Raheem Mostert Out Against Bigger Favorite Bills

The Miami Dolphins found out for sure on Friday who their starting quarterback and running back would be when they play at the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Round on Sunday. The Miami Dolphins injury update has Skylar Thompson at QB and Jeff Wilson Jr. at RB with Teddy Bridgewater and Raheem Mostert unable to take their positions.

The Dolphins are up to a 13.5-point underdog after opening at 9.0 points when it was unknown who their quarterback would be.

Bridgewater will be Thompson’s backup Sunday afternoon (1 p.m. ET).

“Teddy’s done a great job really just being a part of the team, getting himself closer and closer to being able to play the way that he knows he needs to play,” Miami coach Mike McDaniel told the Dolphins website Friday. “Really doing whatever it takes so that we can have him available on Sunday. But yeah, Skylar will get the start.”

Skylar Thompson injured his left leg in the regular-season finale, an 11-6 win against the New York Jets. The rookie was starting in place of Bridgewater, who dislocated the pinky on his throwing hand in Week 17 in a loss to the New England Patriots. Bridgewater had started in place of Tua Tagovailoa, who remains in NFL concussion protocol after he displayed symptoms following their Week 16 game against the Green Bay Packers.

The Dolphins were 7-1 in the first eight games Tagovailoa started this season, and he was injured and did not finish the one they lost (to the Cincinnati Bengals). But Miami was 0-4 in the last four games Tagovailoa started, and lost five in a row overall before defeating the Jets and qualifying for the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the AFC.

Mostert broke his thumb against the Jets and is out Sunday. Wilson Jr. will be backed up by Salvon Ahmed, who is the only other running back on the active roster with Myles Gaskin (shoulder) on injured reserve.

The AFC East rival Dolphins and Bills split their two games this season. Miami won 21-19 at home in Week 3, and Buffalo won 32-29 at home in Week 15, with Tagovailoa starting each.

“I really love the times that we’ve been fortunate enough to do it, to play a team three times,” McDaniel said. “You really trim the fat, and it’s about a team’s will against each other. It’s an equalizer for sure, because you know exactly what it’s going to feel like the first play of the game and on all phases.”

The Bills, the No. 2 seed, do not have any player listed as out on the injury report.
