Isiah Pacheco will have his hands full in the AFC Championship Game against the stingy Cincinnati Bengals run defense. The Bengals held the Buffalo Bills running back duo of James Cook and Devin Singletary to 37 yards on 11 carries. The Bengals jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, which took the running game for the Bills out of it. Quarterback Josh Allen threw the ball 42 times, and Patrick Mahomes could do the same. Head coach Andy Reid will question giving a rookie running back the ball more than 12 times come Sunday, with Mahomes seemingly healthy.
Pacheco started last week strong. He took his first carry for 12 yards and finished the first half with 78 yards, including breaking a 39-yarder into the red zone. He preceded to run the ball only five times in the second half, with Mahomes returning to action. Even with Pacheco running strong, the Chiefs decided to go to Jerick McKinnon on the final offensive drive of the game. McKinnon has yet to fumble on a carry this season, while Pacheco has fumbled twice.
The Bengals rank in the top 10 in opposing running back carries on the season at 20 per game, and with Reid advocating for a running back by committee since his days as the Eagles head coach, a split backfield could be in line for the AFC Championship Game.
