Will Sean Payton be coming out of the broadcast booth to coach the Arizona Cardinals? Payton stepped away from the New Orleans Saints following the 2022 NFL season and spent the past year as an analyst with Fox Sports. He has spent the early part of this offseason going through the interview process with several teams looking for a new coach, but the Cardinals have emerged as the most likely option. The Cardinals next head coach odds were updated on Thursday afternoon, with Payton making a big move up the board.

Sean Payton Line Moving in Cardinals Next Head Coach Odds
Per DraftKings Sportsbook, Sean Payton opened as a slight underdog to become the Cardinals’ next head coach (+350), but that line dropped (+750) when Payton met with a handful of other teams. Now, Payton is now just +150 to replace Kliff Kingsbury, behind just former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores (-125). Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn was a front-runner but reportedly told teams he was planning on staying in Dallas next season.
The Cardinals next head coach odds update comes following the report from CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson that Payton was in Arizona for a meeting with Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill and GM Monti Ossenfort. Payton had interviewed with the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans, but the Panthers hired Frank Reich on Thursday, and the Texans appear to be looking in another direction.
That leaves the Denver Broncos, who looked like the clear front-runner for Payton earlier in the week. However, it has been reported by Sports Illustrated that the “flame died out” on that front, with Payton pushing back a second interview to meet with the Cardinals again.
Payton would be entering a tough situation with the Cardinals if he were to take the position. The team hitched their wagon to quarterback Kyler Murray by inking the dual-threat to a massive extension last offseason, leaving very little cap space on the books. The quarterback will be coming back from a torn ACL and the Cardinals’ roster will likely need an overhaul to turn around the level of play we saw during their 4-13 season.
The Cardinals would also have to pay a hefty price and work out compensation with the New Orleans Saints in order to hire Payton this offseason. While the latest Cardinals head coach odds show Sean Payton with a much stronger chance to take the gig, it’s much more likely that he returns to the broadcast booth for another year and throws his hat in the ring again next offseason.
