Bengals-Bills Best Bet: Can Buffalo’s Defense Limit Hayden Hurst?

The Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals will square off on tonight’s edition of Monday Night Football. If the Bills win, they’ll only need to beat the Patriots to secure a first-round bye. If the Bengals win, they could secure a first-round bye should the Chiefs lose next week. Bengals-Bills Best Bet: Hayden Hurst Player Prop

Hayden Hurst Prop O/U 29.5 Receiving Yards

The Buffalo Bills own one of the NFL’s best defenses. The unit ranks fourth in defense-adjusted value over average (DVOA) and fifth in total yards allowed per game (317.7). The Bills have even allowed 26.5 fewer yards per game on the road than at home this year. With a mostly clean injury report aside from safety Jordan Poyer, who is questionable, the Bills should cause problems for Joe Burrow and the Bengals.

Buffalo’s defense has proven especially stingy against tight ends. The Bills are yet to allow a touchdown to the position and have allowed the fifth-fewest yards per game to the position (38.2). That’s despite tight ends having drawn plenty of total targets (111) and caught plenty of total catches (76). For example, Cole Kmet and Tyler Conklin both caught five passes against Buffalo in recent weeks — but neither could turn those catches into at least 30 yards.

That leaves Cincinnati’s starting tight end, Hayden Hurst, in an unenviable position. Hurst has averaged 33.3 receiving yards per game this year and has beaten this number in exactly half of his appearances. But because of Buffalo’s strong defensive form against tight ends — and rain in the forecast tonight in Cincinnati — a below-average performance should be in the cards for Hurst on Monday.
