There’s a lot to unpack off and on the field for the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s even before we get to the Chiefs Super Bowl odds. NFL fans are about to get Taylor Swift shoved down their throat more than those Patrick Mahomes insurance commercials. Nonetheless, onto our Chiefs Super Bowl prediction and picks.
Chiefs Super Bowl Prediction: Sorry, Taylor
Time is simply running out for Patrick Mahomes. Maybe it’s getting bounced out of the playoffs in the first or second round, maybe it’s the boiling point for Mahomes himself, dealing with ineptitude around him. The Chiefs may look like they fought tooth and nail to claw their way atop the AFC West and make the playoffs once again, but it looked more like hemming and hawing.
Much of this is not on Mahomes as his frustrations became more and more visible throughout the season, culminating in blaming the refs for another loss. Mahomes blamed everyone, stopping short of calling out Taylor Swift for abandoning her beau Travis Kelce for a tour stop.
People keep waiting for this Chiefs offense to come alive, dominate, and be that originator we saw right through last year’s Super Bowl win. But where has that been this year and how exactly are they just going to figure it out? At least the Philadelphia Eagles had a 10-1 stretch of playing bad football, the Chiefs just couldn’t get out of their own way – primarily on offense. Mental mistakes are just that; a pattern of repeat missteps that ultimately cost a game. That can come in the form of lining up offsides to dropping touchdown passes in the first quarter. Even Kelce is out of form, snapping a seven season streak of 1000 yards receiving.
In order for the Chiefs to repeat as champs two big things need to happen, one requiring a level of optimism not rewarded in a 10-1 ticket. The big thing is the offense needs to return to championship form. Of course, they haven’t looked like that since beating the Eagles last year. People around Mahomes are tight because Mahomes is tight; a trickle down effect of nerves that even a champion can’t remove from the locker room. Even in what should be a first round victory, someone is going to make a mistake on offense, most likely costing points for the Chiefs.
The other thing is just hoping that no wheels start to fall off on the defense. Steve Spagnuolo is one of the top defensive coordinators in the league this year and carried the offense to a division crown. Things get tighter and tougher in the postseason, especially against monster talents like Lamar Jackson – assuming KC gets that far. It’s great to hope the Chiefs D can hang on to their improved form, but to be fair, this is the first time we’ve seen this level of defense from KC in a while.
