It feels like the San Francisco 49ers always have some confusing injury news to analyze every week. With one of their star receivers questionable, that remains true in Week 4. So is Deebo Samuel playing? He failed to practice all week but still picked up a questionable tag. Let’s look at the most recent Deebo Samuel injury updates as we assess whether he will be available in Week 4.
Deebo Samuel Injury Update: Is San Francisco’s Star Playing Sunday?
Deebo Samuel Injury Update
Update on October 1 at 111:00 Eastern: The latest Deebo Samuel injury update projects the WR to play on Sunday.
The San Francisco 49ers saw Deebo Samuel get knocked out of last Thursday’s game — briefly — with an injury. He returned that same drive and scored a 27-yard touchdown, but even with some extra rest from last Thursday to now, he has yet to practice since that game. Samuel is dealing with rib and knee injuries.
Despite not practicing, Samuel sounds optimistic about his chances of playing on Sunday. On Friday, he told reporters that he “[felt] pretty good,” adding that “[w]e’ll just see how I continue to progress for the next couple of days.” Still, he is on the wrong side of questionable after failing to log a single rep at practice.
Is Deebo Samuel Playing for San Francisco in Week 4?
The San Francisco 49ers will take on the surprisingly plucky Arizona Cardinals this weekend. They were without wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk last week, but head coach Kyle Shanahan has confirmed that Aiyuk will return, which gives the 49ers enough depth to not need to rush Samuel back. It is worth noting that they’ll also be without Jauan Jennings, which may influence their decision.

So is Deebo Samuel playing for San Francisco in Week 4? We don’t know yet, but I don’t think he will — and if he does, I don’t think he’ll play very much. Players who fail to attend a single practice all week rarely play, and I don’t think Samuel will be the exception to that rule. The 49ers have no reason to rush him back, especially with Aiyuk available.
