The overachieving 2-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a chance to hand the Philadelphia Eagles their first loss of the season. After defeating the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football, Eagles fans are still left feeling disheartened. Jalen Hurts has a chance to make a statement tonight against a sound Buccaneers defense that will look to limit his work on the ground. With that being said, we’re targeting Hurts through the air.
Hurts was able to connect with DeVonta Smith on numerous occasions last week. Smith reeled in five catches for 131 yards, including a 63-yard deep ball that gave the Eagles a 27-7 lead in the third quarter. Opposite of Smith was A.J. Brown, who showed his displeasure on the sideline while the Eagles were ahead. Hurts made an effort to get Brown the ball after the altercation, but it wasn’t needed with the Eagles’ success in the run game. That will change tonight against a Buccaneers defense that allowed just 67 yards on the ground to the Chicago Bears in Week 2.
D’Andre Swift, behind the Eagles lethal offensive line, controlled the game for the Eagles. They took the time-of-possession battle by 19 minutes on their way to 259 rushing yards. The Buccaneers’ game plan must be for them to live with Hurts beating them through the air, leading to more pass attempts. He threw just 23 passes in Week 2 for 193 yards. We will back his pass attempts tonight, while I project for the Buccaneers offense to put up points against an Eagles defense that is not the same from a year ago.

Feed A.J. Brown the football — that’s the message he is sending to his teammates. Although he is a top-10 wide receiver in the league, he has been sluggish to start the season, largely because he has to contend with another elite receiver in Smith. But Brown and the rest of the Eagles’ starting offense didn’t play in the preseason, so the rust should be well off after two wins where the offense hasn’t looked like themselves.
While the Buccaneers were gifted with a quarterback matchup in Week 2 against Justin Fields, they’re about to be humbled tonight against an MVP candidate. In Week 1, Kirk Cousins had a field day through the air. He totaled 344 yards and two touchdowns on 44 pass attempts. If the Buccaneers offense can put up points, Brown should be heavily targeted after just six targets in Week 2, with most of them coming in the second half.
Hurts connected with Brown in the end zone late in the game for a touchdown that was called back after a holding penalty from running back Rashaad Penny. After Brown beat his man coverage, Hurts also overthrew him late in the game. This is the game where the Eagles finally gel on offense in the passing game and move to 3-0.
