Dan Campbell is entering his third year as head coach of the Detroit Lions. His two years in Detroit haven’t been very successful in the win-loss column, but they’ve improved dramatically in terms of team culture and respect. Campbell and his staff earned the respect of NFL fans with their appearance on the “Hard Knocks” HBO documentary series. The show depicted a new team culture developing in Detroit coming off the back of a 3-13-1 season.
The Lions’ 3 wins in 2021 were among the league’s worst. They turned that around under Campbell by going 9-8 in 2022 and competed for a playoff spot till the final weeks. There’s now hope that the Lions can finally break through and make their first playoff appearance since 2016. If they do, Campbell will definitely be in the hunt to be considered the league’s best coach in 2023. He leads the NFL futures odds for Coach of the Year at +850.
The rest of the Coach of the Year odds board features a host of candidates that are looking for organizational rebuilds. Sean Payton (+900) is taking over the helm of the Denver Broncos and looking to get the franchise back on track. Payton had a controversial ending to his time with the New Orleans Saints. However, it’s hard to ignore his success in New Orleans, especially with Drew Brees. He will look to do the same with Russell Wilson in Denver.
Matt Eberflus (+1100) is taking on a similar task with the Chicago Bears. Justin Fields established himself as one of the most electric quarterbacks in the NFL last season. If Eberflus can continue to shape Fields’ development and the Bears have success in the win column, Eberflus’ COY odds should be the beneficiary. Arthur Smith (+1400) will look to do the same with Desmond Ridder, plus rookie Bijan Robinson who is expected be a bell cow back.
The top of the NFL futures odds board for Coach of the Year features established names and others like Campbell and Eberflus who are early in their tenure. If Matt LaFleur (+1500) can keep the Green Bay Packers viable without Aaron Rodgers he will receive serious consideration for the award. Likewise, Robert Saleh (+1600) will look to use Rodgers to change the New York Jets’ fortunes.
Mike McDaniel (+2200), Doug Pederson (+2200) and Pete Carroll (+2500) round out the top ten names on the COY odds board. The trio are well established as NFL coaches, with talented and experienced rosters. Their past success makes it less likely for them, but NFL Futures bettors can still look for value on these names and others lower ranked in this market.
