NFL Offensive Player of the Year Odds Analysis

The reigning Offensive Player of the Year and his runner-up lead the odds board at +700 as we head into the new season. Christian McCaffrey will look to build on his impressive 2023 performance, which included 1,459 rushing yards, 14 rushing touchdowns, 564 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns. Tyreek Hill clocks in at the same price.

You’ll see CeeDee Lamb in the double-digit range. This offseason, he made headlines with his holdout, aiming for a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys. That deal is now signed, and he’s ready to show his worth this season. Meanwhile, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, also at +1000 and seeking a new contract, might extend his holdout into the regular season if a deal isn’t reached in time.

Further down the list at +2000, watch for a pair of players facing significant changes to their offenses. Running back Bijan Robinson heads into his sophomore season with a new coaching staff and quarterback. Former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has joined forces with another team in the division — the Philadelphia Eagles — and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

@dannyburke5: Given what transpired in Atlanta last year, you may be shocked to see someone pick Bijan Robinson for this award. The good news is that the team has completely revamped its coaching staff.

Former Head Coach Arthur Smith, a.k.a. the “Bijan Robinson stopper,” is gone. With Raheem Morris stepping in as head coach and Zac Robinson taking over as offensive coordinator, Robinson should have plenty of opportunities to shine. Oh, and Kirk Cousins is coming in as quarterback, which is a major upgrade.

Despite being held back last season, Robinson still managed to rush for 976 yards on 214 carries, though he was limited in goal-line opportunities, scoring only four rushing touchdowns. In the passing game, he caught 58 passes for 487 yards and added four receiving touchdowns.

With a competent coaching staff and quarterback in the mix, along with the league’s easiest schedule, it’s more than plausible that Robinson could be a top contender for this award. The odds being offered are too juicy to ignore.

@is_sirois: It’s a lot easier to win Offensive Player of the Year when you command the lion’s share of your team’s offensive production. That’s the situation that CeeDee Lamb finds himself in this season.

Last year, Lamb led the NFL in targets (181) and receptions (135). However, he trailed Tyreek Hill in receiving yards (1,749 to 1,799) and receiving touchdowns (12 to 13). Obviously, Hill generated a ton of yards and touchdowns relative to his total touches.

Hill needs to be hyper-efficient to post those numbers, as the Miami Dolphins offense rotates him off the field a bunch. Hill played on only 68.4% of snaps last year. Lamb played on 84.9%.

This year’s Cowboys enter the season with question marks at most skill positions. The WR1 is obviously Lamb, and the TE1 is obviously Jake Ferguson, but the WR2 could be either Brandin Cooks or Jalen Tolbert, and the RB1 could be anyone. Literally. I’m not convinced that any of Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott or Dalvin Cook will be starting after the trade deadline.

Dallas’ offense will have to run through Lamb, and, if he can stay healthy, the volume he’ll see will far exceed Hill’s. Beating Christian McCaffrey won’t be easy, but since McCaffrey plays a position that exposes him to injury risk far more often, I’m betting Lamb at +1100 on FanDuel.
