Super Bowl Novelty Bet Legal States: Where Can You Bet on the Coin Toss, Gatorade Color & More

As the Super Bowl approaches, some of the most fun betting markets begin to open. Unlike regular NFL games, you can’t usually bet on things that aren’t directly tied to a player’s performance or the outcome — but in some states, there are some exceptions for the Super Bowl. Let’s break down the states in which it is legal to place Super Bowl novelty bets, including the coin toss, the Gatorade color and more, including the first song at this year’s halftime show.

The national anthem length is a popular Super Bowl novelty prop bet. Unfortunately, the length of the National Anthem is not a legal Super Bowl novelty bet in most states. For Super Bowl 58, betting on the national anthem is not available in the United States, but it is available in Canada via FanDuel.

Like the national anthem, bettors often get action on the winner of the coin toss — or the side of the coin lands on. While not all coin toss bets are available in every state, FanDuel listed the following states as ones in which it intended to take online action on the market: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Where Can You Bet on the Super Bowl Kickoff & Octopus?

Because kickoff and octopus markets have to do with the actual on-field sporting action at the Super Bowl — and because they’re both positive events — state-by-state rules are less relevant for these markets than others. It’ll be more important to know if your book offers them than if your state allows it.

Where Can You Bet on the Super Bowl Halftime Show?

The length of the halftime show and both the first and lost songs played during it are popular Super Bowl bets — but it’s not a legal offering within the United States. You’ll have to head to Canada for this one.

The color of the inevitable post-game Gatorade bath is one of the best Super Bowl novelty props. Because there’s an argument that the color correlates with the team that wins the Super Bowl, this one is a bit less sketchy than the others. FanDuel listed the following states as ones in which it intended to take online action on the market: Arizona, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia.
