Tom Brady has decided it’s finally time to hang ’em up. The GOAT sent out a video to social media on Wednesday morning announcing that he has decided to retire after 23 years in the league. He was set to become a free agent if he chose to keep playing. Many saw him as a likely option for the San Francisco 49ers given their issues with injuries and inconsistency at the quarterback position over the past few years, but they’ll now have to consider that option off the table. Tom Brady Retirement Changes 49ers starting Quarterback Odds
Tom Brady was one of the favorites to become the next 49ers quarterback (+110 on DraftKings Sportsbook before the announcement) but now their in-house options have taken over the 49ers’ starting quarterback odds. Per PointsBet, Trey Lance (-500) is the heavy favorite to begin next season under center for the 49ers. He’s followed by Brock Purdy (+300) and Brady (+3000).

Lance was expected to be the 49ers’ quarterback this season but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. He is expected to be fully healthy by training camp this offseason.
“Thankful for this year,” Lance posted to Instagram on Monday. “Blessed to have been around this special group of guys who inspired me every day. Not how we planned it, but the best days are still ahead.”
Lance was replaced by veteran Jimmy Garoppolo after the injury, but Garoppolo ended up suffering his own season-ender later in the year — paving the way for former “Mr. Irrelevant” Purdy to lead the team to their third Conference Championship in the past four years.
“Brock, he plays the game the right way. That’s why he had so much success,” Lance said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “I was just super excited for him. He worked his butt off, all OTAs, since the first day he got here, since the day he got drafted. So he deserved everything he got this year and more. I truly believe that.
“Just tried to help him as much as I could. Learned a lot from him, as well. Just from a human being standpoint, he’s a great person, someone that I see a lot of myself in, so it’s great for me to be able to have a quarterback room like we did throughout the year.”
The Tom Brady retirement opens the door for a Lance-Purdy quarterback room for the foreseeable future. Based on the latest 49ers starting quarterback odds, Lance will likely have another opportunity to prove himself to begin the 2023 NFL season.
