The New Jersey Devils looked dead to rights after two games of the Stanley Cup Playoff series against the New York Rangers. The inexperienced group looked intimated and outclassed by the Rangers, losing both games at home in blowout fashion. But the Devils dug deep and found their stride at Madison Square Garden this week, setting up a critical Game 5 with the series all knotted up at two games apiece. Best Rangers-Devils Bets: New Jersey Has Found Its Form
The Devils looked to be on sweep alert, losing both Games 1 & 2 by a score of 5-1. But after winning in OT in Game 3, the Devils put together their best performance in the playoffs to date, winning 3-1 in front of a dejected crowd at MSG. 21-year-old superstar Jack Hughes got the party started for the Devils, opening the scoring with a sweet breakaway move in the first period.
While the Devils are starting to feel themselves and show why they dominated throughout the regular season, the Rangers are left searching for answers. Head coach Gerard Gallant called out the team’s compete level after the Game 4 performance.
“The only thing I liked [Tuesday] night, I thought the Kid Line played really hard,’’ Gallant said Wednesday, per NY Post. “And our goaltending was solid. We need a lot more from everybody else.”
Specifically, Gallant is calling on his star-studded top-six of Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Patrick Kane, Artemi Panarin and Vladimir Tarasenko. The core forward group had very little offensive production on Monday night and will need to be a heck of a lot better if the Rangers are to switch the momentum back to their side this series.
Interestingly enough, neither team has been able to take advantage of home ice through the first four games of the series. But look for that to change in Game 5.
Sure, the Rangers will likely come out a lot less flat than they did in Game 4, and their top offensive playmakers should have more impact. But they have already missed an opportunity to pounce on a young Devils team, who now feel extra confident going back into their own building.
Expect the Devils to stay hot in Game 5, giving their home fans an opportunity to see a playoff win at Prudential Center for the first time since 2018.
