NHL Anytime Goal Scorer: Canucks-Avalanche Clash of the Titans

Not only did we hit on our Sunday NHL anytime goal scorer bet, Vincent Trocheck came through double for us! We only needed one, but thank you sir for the bonus to make us feel extra good. Today the target is another marquee matchup with maybe a little more long-term stakes — at least in terms of teams with real eyes on the Stanley Cup. Let’s not dilly dally and continue our NHL anytime goal scorer series; here is the best bet for Canucks-Avalanche anytime goal scorer.

Canucks-Avalanche Anytime Goal Scorer

Even though the Canucks and Avalanche are two of the best teams in the NHL by record, metrically they are surprisingly average. Colorado ranks ninth in Corsi-for (puck possession) and 11th in Fenwick-for (unblocked shots), and Vancouver — the Presidents Cup leader — is 22nd in both. The two teams are better in high-danger chances, however: Seventh and eighth respectively.

That said, what stands out most are the recent results from the two teams. Vancouver is coming off a seven-goal game (a loss, but still) and has scored at least four in three of the last four games. The Avalanche, meanwhile, are letting up goals at a high rate over the last couple of weeks — no games of fewer than three goals allowed in the last six, including three with at least five.

This is significant because, when choosing an anytime goal scorer, we’re looking for some value in the odds and not just attacking the studs. Well, Vancouver has a lot of players in that second tier, whereas Colorado is looking at multiple players in the minus for an anytime goal. Since we have more options, the move here is to go after a Canuck.

Unlike on Sunday, when we had some solid odds discrepancies to choose from, the books are pretty aligned on the Canucks anytime goal scorer odds.

We’re going to stay away from the top 3 in Miller, Pettersson and Boeser — not because they’re bad bets or even terrible value, but simply because they’re all top-11 goal scorers in the NHL. Instead, we’re going to dip down the board to a guy who gets to play with some of the best assist men in the game.

Nils Hoglander will skate on the first line with Pettersson and Lindholm. Lindholm is merely a decent playmaker, but Pettersson is currently 10th in the NHL in assists and finished in the same spot a season ago.

On top of that, Hoglander will get plenty of time with Quinn Hughes, who leads all defensemen in assists and is fourth overall. That is a ton of playmaking for Hoglander’s even-strength line.

The downside is he won’t get either of those guys or Miller on the power play, but the five-on-five running mates look great for him.

As for Hoglander’s individual prowess, he has three goals in the last six games and 17 total on the season. He also leads the team in individual high-danger chances, which is another testament to how he plays on that top line with other elite playmakers. At +350, this is exceptional value for a guy who has a lot to work with.
