There are a lot of reasons to like Spieth this week. Not only did he take home the event last season, but he also had a good showing at the Masters, finishing in a tie for fourth (-7) after a scorching hot final round. But the young Texan thinks the layout at Harbour Town Golf Links could make for some surprises on the leaderboard throughout the weekend.
“I think on a course like this, it’s going to be more unique than any of the ones that we’ve experienced in any of the elevated events so far because you have a course where it doesn’t matter about length,” he said Tuesday after the ceremonial cannon shot, per Golfweek. “You just have to golf your ball around. It’s an advantage if you hit it far and straight, but you’ve got to take risk on more than you do other places if you want to try and keep hitting driver.
“It could be just such a massively bunched leaderboard of such big names, it’s got the potential to be as exciting an event as we’ve seen this year.”
Spieth was able to outlast Cantlay at last year’s RBC Heritage, winning the tournament in a playoff. Collin Morikawa, who is also receiving plenty of betting attention, finished tied for 26th. He proved to be a threat briefly at The Masters, but could not hang with Rahm throughout the weekend.
