2023 The American Express One and Done Picks: Ben Rasa Makes His Pick

One and Done golf pools will have a bit of a different look this week in California at The American Express and additional variables.

We will be dealing with a 54-hole cut, long rounds due to the Pro-Am and a rotation of courses making our One and Done selection a little harder this week. With another $1.4 million to the winner, every week is important and we have various options for our selection.

We took Corey Conners at last week’s Sony Open, who finished a respectable t-12th for a $138k payout. In addition, we were right to hold off on Tom Kim, who missed the cut.

Let’s dive into The American Express targets for One and Done this week. And if you’re betting the event this week, bettors can place just $5 on any golfer and DraftKings will automatically award $200 in bonus bets for first-time depositors. Click here to claim this great offer.

American Express One and Done Picks

Safe Pick: Sungjae Im

Let’s start with a safer option in Sungjae Im. The missed cut at Sony was a rarity for the South Korean, who hadn’t missed a cut since July and seemingly has the game to handle any type of course. He has four appearances here and finished 12th, 10th, 12th, and 11th, so clearly he seems to like the format. Given the field strength we have a lot of top end options, but we always have to weigh the opportunity cost of burning an elite golfer in a subpar event. That’s probably what keeps me off a guy like Sungjae Im here, but if you are looking for a high probability of securing some money he should be on your radar.

Contrarian Pick: Cam Davis

Some One and Done pools are gigantic so we have to plan ahead and possibly take some risks. I still think reaching too far can get you into trouble, and there is no reason to take someone totally unknown. A guy like Cam Davis is far from that as he’s won on the PGA Tour and is an elite birdie maker. This setup is certainly going to allow guys to go low and if he can avoid the mistakes he easily can get in the mix.

Davis played last week at the Sony Open and made the cut. He gained over six strokes with ball striking, but an ice-cold putter limited the upside. If Davis flips the putter he can get in the mix as he did back in 2021 when he finished third. The final benefit is we save all the top-end golfers and that will pay dividends as we get later in the season.

My One and Done Pick: Brian Harman

I’m going with a relatively conservative pick in One and Done this week with Brian Harman. He checks a ton of boxes and isn’t a guy I’m worried about not having available later in the season.

He is super consistent, making every cut since the Scottish Open in July of 2022. Harman played last week at Sony finishing 32nd. Getting some reps in Hawaii the past two weeks is useful and now he comes to a spot he seems to absolutely love. The course history jumps off the page, with Harman playing this event every year and getting in the hunt regularly — including a third-place finish last year. With the unique format, and average-at-best prize pool it’s a perfect week to back a guy like Harman.
