2023 Wyndham Championship First Look at Outright Odds: Good Week to Back First-Time Winner Hopefuls

It has been a long season of golf, and the PGA Tour has finally reached the finale. The regular season ends at the Wyndham Championship for the last event on the schedule. There will be more golf with the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but for many players their seasons and possibly their statuses end this week. That is all the motivation in the world, and although this is not the strongest field, there are tons of storylines and guys looking to solidify their spot in the top 70. In the betting market, there could be another first-time winner, and plenty of guys are potential outright plays in this field. It is still early, but let’s take a look at 2023 Wyndham Championship odds and make some predictions.

2023 Wyndham Championship Odds & Bets

2023 Wyndham Championship Outright Bet: Hideki Matsuyama (18-1, DraftKings)

It has not been a great year for Hideki Matsuyama backers in the outright markets, as it has been over a year since he last won on tour. It is not to say his game is not in good shape and the year has been a disaster, but for a player of this caliber, no wins is disappointing. The good news is the season is not over, and given the field, this might be one of the better chances Matsuyama has to get a 2023 win.

Coming off a 30th last week at the 3M is not the most encouraging result, but digging into the numbers offers more to be excited about. First, Matsuyama seems healthy, and the ball striking is back to its typical form, with another seven-plus strokes gained tee to green. The problem is he needs to make his share of putts to compete in birdie fests. It is not to say Wyndham will suddenly fix Matsuyama’s putting woes, but coming to a place where he has plenty of experience cannot hurt. Add in the weak field, and Matsuyama at 18-1 is more than enough to be one of the favorites on the betting card.

2023 Wyndham Championship Outright Bet: Byeong Hun An (40-1 FanDuel)

Some first-time winners have emerged late in the season, so why not another one at the Wyndham? If going that route, there are dozens of guys without a win who are playing well enough to warrant consideration. One of them is Byeong Hun An, who sits at 40-1 across the market — at first glance, that number seems too short, but the metrics perhaps suggest otherwise.

An is coming off a successful Euro run that included a third in Scotland and a 23rd at the Open. One of the many positives is his off-tee game, where he is gaining strokes virtually every event. Driving distance is not important at Sedgefield, but accuracy certainly can help. This is something that plays right into An’s hands and at least gives him a chance to thrive here. Like all players, he needs the putter to come along, but An gained three strokes on the greens in 2019 en route to a third-place finish. At 40-1 in this field, An is a live outright as another guy fighting for his breakthrough win.

2023 Wyndham Championship Longshot Bet: Alex Noren (80-1, FanDuel)

It is the last tournament of the year, and those who have read these articles all year might be wondering, “is this just a last-chance Hail Mary to cash the elusive Alex Noren outright, or is he actually a good play this week? The true answer is both; Noren has featured here for so long this year, but this is the type of event he could win if he is ever going to grab a W on tour.

2023 has not been great to Noren, but he does come in playing some of his best golf of the season. He finished 13th at the 3M, made the cut at the Open and also was top 10 at the Rocket Mortgage in early July. How he is doing it might sound problematic, as it is all short game related, but that is not overly unusual for Noren’s style. The big question is off the tee, but this course does not demand a ton from drivers, which is a benefit to Noren. His odds at 80-1 in a field this weak are worth considering in the outright market, even if this is one of the more tilting guys to back all season.
