This stop in Japan is another staple of the swing season, and it brings out some of the biggest names in the game looking to get a few reps in during the offseason. For a few this is the first action since the Ryder Cup, and with the small field, there are guaranteed four rounds for every golfer. Breaking down a non-cut gives shorter odds but also fewer names to choose from. 2023 Zozo Championship Outright Bet: Collin Morikawa (12-1, FanDuel)
There are some short prices in the outright market this week, but the smaller field and higher top end will do that. Morikawa is 12-1, and although he is looking to break a win drought, there is zero doubt this is a good opportunity. He makes the trip to the Zozo each year, finishing top 10 back in 2021. He’s also a world-class iron player, and this layout is much more technical than bomber heavy. Morikawa’s putter is always the wild card, but having played in Rome, his game comes in pretty ready to compete. At 12-1, Morikawa is a good option to start building out cards, as he could snap this win drought at any time.
2023 Zozo Championship Outright Bet: Cameron Davis (22-1, FanDuel)
Davis is a good option for the second straight week. He wasn’t rewarded with an outright win last week at the Shriners Open, but it’s hard to complain about a seventh-place finish where Davis gained in all four categories. He is riding a hot putter, which is scary but also something that proves the upside is there.
Non-cuts are right up Davis’ alley, as he is an elite scorer that at times makes mistakes. The numerous par 3’s will be a challenge, but Keegan Bradley hoisted the trophy here last year, and there are some similarities in their games. If Davis continues to pour in putts, there is no reason he can’t get in the mix, and the number hasn’t budged from 22-1 despite the quality output last week.
2023 Zozo Championship Outright Bet: Alex Noren (50-1, FanDuel)
I apologize in advance, but there is no reason to leave Noren off the card after he was right in the hunt last week. This guy has been so close to getting his first PGA Tour win, and he proved last week at the Shriners he still has the talent. A third-place finish despite being flat with the putter was tough, as Noren normally is a short game specialist. Ten strokes gained tee to green is massively encouraging, and any type of effort like that here will have him around Sunday’s first page of the leaderboard.
Noren was 17th here in 2021 and should benefit from a technical layout that doesn’t require distance. His off-tee game is the biggest concern, but again, this track doesn’t emphasize that too much, and last week Noren gained a massive 3.3 strokes off the tee. The number has come down a little, but 50-1 in a non-cut field still offers plenty of room to navigate. Noren has shown it in Europe plenty of times, so maybe Japan is finally the spot for him to grab his first PGA Tour win.
