The PGA Tour stays in California this week with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am next up on the schedule. This is another staple of early season golf and with it brings another event with multiple courses. However, this Is an elevated event which means $20 million dollars in the pool that is up for grabs. In addition, it’s a non-cut so no matter who you choose in One and Done they should be getting a paycheck. The field is loaded and that makes our choices that much tougher. Here are a few names to consider when making your One and Done selection this week. If you haven’t played PGA One and Done before, here’s a quick primer on the basic rules. It’s almost like an NFL survivor pool in that you must choose a single golfer every week, but once you pick them, they are ineligible for the rest of the season. The goal is to accumulate the most money during the year, so we are after tournament winners while hoping to avoid the missed cuts that net us $0 for the week.
For One and Done purposes our goal remains the same, which is to bank as much money as possible while not going too aggressively early in the season. We have a massive $20 million in the purse for this week’s tournament, so finding a potential winner will go a long way toward being in contention as the season rolls on.
PGA AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am One and Done Picks for 2024
PGA AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am One and Done Picks Expert Analysis & Picks
Jordan Spieth
Going to be a popular name this week and for good reason considering all his history at Pebble. He plays this course all the time and has littered the first page of the leaderboard including a win back in 2017. He has the skillset to fit what Pebble demands and the coastal winds aren’t going to effect his play.
The bigger question is that we haven’t seen Spieth since the Sentry at the beginning of the season so do we need to worry about form? If his result there was any indication the answer is no with a crisp 3rd place showing to get 2024 started. Coming to this place you always are going to have Spieth on your radar, and if you aren’t saving him for later in the year this is a perfect spot to use him for your One and Done choice this week.
Justin Thomas
I bet Justin Thomas this week so clearly I think he has a shot to get into the mix on Sunday. He is coming off a 3rd place finish at Amex and is another player who clearly can deal with the elements. This field is stacked given its an elevated event, so you aren’t going to have concentrated One and Done ownership on a guy like Thomas with all the other options around him.
We know that JT had a poor 2023 and it wouldn’t shock me to see him get his year started with some big results before the majors. I actually like the courses for his game and we know that a non-cut gives him ample time to find one of his classic nuclear rounds where he gets dialed in.
The two things im struggling with most here are do I want to use him this early in the season, and how concerned should I be about this not being a usual stop on his schedule. I think ultimately I prefer backing Thomas at around 22-1 to win the event in the outright market, but he still belongs in the One and Done conversation here at Pebble.
Ben Rasa’s PGA One and Done Pick: Max Homa
Im going with Max Homa as my One and Done selection for this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am as he checks a ton of boxes I am looking for. We know the Californian knows his way around Poa greens, these type of tracks, and this specific event given his course history. Furthermore, we have seen Homa in recent weeks and the game looks to be in solid shape. He finished 14th at Sentry to get his year started and then 13th at Farmers with some impressive short game numbers. We know that his ball striking can do the heavy lifting so if he syncs up the putter this is a threat to take home millions of dollars for your One and Done team.
Like every top end player, we are going to once again ask the question of do we want to use him in January or wait for a different week. The elevated events bring such big purses I think you have to lean to choosing best available, especially if you don’t have a tournament in mind for a guy down the line. For me Homa is someone im willing to use in this key spot and I expect him to give us a chance to grab a big piece of this 20 million dollar prize pool.
