The second major of the year is in the books, and the golf season rolls on. We are back on the PGA Tour with the Charles Schwab Challenge, and though it’s not a major, there’s plenty of high-end talent in this 136-man field. On the betting side, getting back to a typical structure helps with the odds, as having more players naturally leads to a higher payout if we find a winner. Let’s go over some PGA best bets for the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Colonial Country Club is a par 70 sitting around 7,200 yards, but it has a more technical layout that requires a lot of precision on certain holes. Wind is always a factor, and with the right conditions, this will absolutely play harder than what the players saw last week at the PGA Championship.
With distance not being a huge factor this week, we look towards the irons. Colonial thrives on guys being able to dial it in and give themselves plenty of looks around these bentgrass greens.

PGA Outright Pick #1: Tony Finau
Tony Finau constantly finds himself on the betting card. The positive is he is a quality player coming in with some decent form, while the pessimistic view is Finau doesn’t win as much as he should given his talent. The latter has held true in 2024, with a lot of quality results while never hoisting a trophy.
Last week at the PGA Championship, Finau was absolutely crushing with the irons, but unfortunately the rest of his game wasn’t up to par. The result was an 18th that left a lot to be desired despite it being a top-20 in a major. Now he heads to Colonial, a layout that has suited his iron game in his near-decade of experience. If Finau continues to put up the ball-striking numbers, it’s the exact type of field and venue where he can win. The number has come down, but 30-1 still has enough value for an outright.
PGA Charles Schwab Challenge Pick: Tony Finau (30-1 at FanDuel)
PGA Outright Pick #2: Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Coming into the PGA Championship, Bezuidenhout was checking a lot of boxes, but an average-at-best ball-striking start found him just off the cut line, breaking a made-cut streak at six. Now he must start a new streak, and that begins this week at Colonial. This is another venue that fits perfectly with what Bezuidenhout naturally does, as it deemphasizes distance, unlike last week.
There is a little course history to work with here, and Bezuidenhout has positive irons and putting in all three appearances. That’s the combo that he needs and the type of game he has to compete here. If he can survive off the tee, which should be a lot easier this week, he should have a big bounce back at 45-1. I’m focused on outrights, but Bezuidenhout will factor into my card all the way through top 20 this week.
PGA Charles Schwab Challenge Pick: Christiaan Bezuidenhout (45-1 at FanDuel)
PGA Outright Pick #3: Aaron Rai
Unlike the first two mentioned, this is a player to whom I’ve been unexposed in betting markets most of the year. It’s not because the talent isn’t there, but most weeks Rai’s number didn’t provide enough value to merit a position. This week I feel the opposite, with a 65-1 still available for a guy that has the talent to win on tour.
Rai was 12th at the Charles Schwab last year and comes in with some solid ball-striking numbers. Consistency has been an issue, but that’s a more valid concern for matchups/top-20s or other markets not dealing with ceiling performances.
Most of Rai’s top-end finishes on the PGA Tour have been the result of top-end iron play. That’s true of most players, but this type of layout fits the picture where a guy like Rai could finally break through. He has a handful of top-5’s and -10s on tour, including a pair in Houston over the last few years. With the right conditions and some putting luck, Rai could get in the mix on Sunday for a chance at an elusive PGA Tour win.
PGA Charles Schwab Challenge Pick: Aaron Rai (65-1 at FanDuel)
