Nonetheless, let’s get on with our PGA one and done picks for the Farmers Insurance Open.

If you haven’t played One and Done before here’s a quick primer on the basic rules. It’s almost like an NFL survivor pool in that you must choose a single golfer every week, but once you pick them, they are ineligible for the rest of the season. The goal is to accumulate the most money during the year, so we are after tournament winners while hoping to avoid the missed cuts that net us $0 for the week.

The PGA tour season rolls on with the next stop in San Diego for The Farmers Insurance Open. It’s only a few weeks into 2024 but so far picking a winner in One and Done has been nearly impossible. Last week we saw an amateur hoist a trophy and the board was filled with some lesser known names. Regardless of how your first two weeks went there’s dozens more events ready to be tackled. This week we have upwards of 9 million dollars in the pool so finding a golfer with some upside will be key.

Similar to last week, we have multiple courses to deal with, but with most of the focus on Torrey Pines South. One thing that should be different is the test of golf, with this layout being much more difficult to score on. Field wise we have a handful of big names, and then plenty of longshots looking for their turn in the spotlight. Here’s a few guys on my One and Done radar for this weeks Farmers Insurance Open.

PGA Farmers Insurance Open One and Done Picks Expert Analysis & Picks

Eric Cole

One and Done is always a balance of wanting to target a player with a high chance of banking you money, but with enough upside to really contend. Making cuts is great but how you get to the end of the year with a chance is finding a few winners along the way. A player like Eric Cole certainly checks the consistency box with a made cut streak dating back to May 2023.

The bigger question is the upside as Cole is searching for that elusive win, even if he’s peppered the first page of the leaderboard in recent years. To excel here he will need to bring his ball striking with him, but a made cut streak dating back that long shows he is able to tackle any course. Cole is a guy I want to use in One and Done and I think earlier in the year is probably the ideal time.

Tony Finau

I bet Tony Finau this week so clearly I think he has a shot to get into the mix on Sunday. He plays this event every year so experience in getting around Torrey Pines is not an issue. What could be is the putter which is usually the catalyst for a big week from Finau.

So far in 2024 we haven’t seen anything special in results but with just a pair of tournaments im not too worried about the form.

I think the bigger question most people will wrestle with here is do you want to save Tony Finau for a bigger prize pool later in the season. I think once you answer that it becomes clear as he is a great option here, but only if you have others in mind for the biggest events.

I personally will be saving Finau for a later date but wouldn’t fault anyone for choosing to target him at a venue he’s very familiar with.

Ben Rasa’s PGA One and Done Pick: Min Woo Lee

Im going with Min Woo Lee as my One and Done selection for this week’s Farmer’s Insurance Open as I like the upside and do not mind having Lee unavailable for the rest of the season. This is an interesting player overall with not as much experience on tour as others, but with a resume that we need to take notice of. We saw him last week at The Amex finish 21st which isn’t noteworthy but a positive just in the sense of getting some reps in California. Given that he finished 5th at the US Open, 6th at the Players, and 15th at Augusta its clear he can tackle challenging courses and strong fields.

Like all these players Lee will have to string together some ball striking with high upside putting to get in the mix. Typically, the putting side is no problem as he has shown the ability to really roll it, so it will be up to the iron to keep pace. At Torrey North and South, he will need to work in and out of trouble and making those crucial putts will go a long way to success. I like the idea of using Min Woo Lee here as his talent is undeniable, but I don’t really want to plan ahead and target him later in the season.
