Pinehurst No. 2 hosted the US Open back in 2014 when Martin Kaymer won. The Donald Ross layout isn’t distance heavy, which brings a lot of players into the conversation. It has some links tendencies, with these waste areas filled with all sorts of stuff you don’t want to be in if you spray off the tee. Around-the-green game will play a major role, and the golfers will have to navigate Bermuda greens in North Carolina.

They need the full bag to be successful here, but the ability to gain strokes off the tee without it all being on distance is towards the top of the list. Pair that with a rock-solid short game, and you have the formula for success.

PGA Outright Pick #1: Ludvig Aberg

The question every week is now, can anyone stop Scottie Scheffler, or is this just another week where he furthers his historic run? I don’t have the answer to that, but the betting market has some good prices if Scheffler faulters.

Ludvig Aberg isn’t someone I’ve backed a lot in his career. However, he’s clearly ready to win at the highest level, having finished second at The Masters in his first start and being in the hunt all season. Light on experience, he makes up for that with raw talent that can translate anywhere.

Aberg is dominant off the tee, but even more positive are some of the results on technical layouts. He finished 10th at the RBC Heritage, gaining 2.7 off the tee, while he was eighth at the Players with another four strokes gained off the tee. He clearly feels comfortable knowing when to club down and making sure there is an emphasis on hitting these fairways. Aberg’s knee issue is a mystery, but he played at the Memorial and by all reports everything was fine. At 22-1, Aberg is worth a shot in the hopes he joins the major winners list and continues to ascend as one of the best players in the world.

PGA US Open Pick: Ludvig Aberg (22-1 at FanDuel)

PGA Outright Pick #2: Matthew Fitzpatrick

I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with Matthew Fitzpatrick this week, but the more I dug the more I wanted the 2022 US Open winner. He finished fifth at the Memorial thanks to some red-hot putting and now tries his hand at this difficult test of golf. Even though Fitzpatrick’s US Open win was at a completely different course, there are some characteristics that translate across all their layouts. The first is around the green and putting, both of which Fitzpatrick does at an elite level. Add in that he has the abilities off the tee without being a bomber, and the skill profile checks out. Bermuda is his preferred surface, which furthers the case.

Fitzpatrick at 55-1 speaks to the field and the Scheffler situation at the top. I like that Fitzpatrick has years of European experience, as that type of golf comes into play at unique layouts like this one. He needs his game to click in a way it mostly hasn’t in 2024, but the buildup is there and the price is right for a shot on Fitzpatrick.

PGA US Open Pick: Matthew Fitzpatrick (55-1 at FanDuel)

PGA Outright Pick #3: Sungjae Im

Just when I was out, they pulled me back in. I finally had broken free of betting Sungjae Im, and then he gets back-to-back top-10s leading up to this week. Worse than that, the books threw out a 110-1 on him. As is the case with many guys in this field, it would be a career-defining win for Im, but his game seems to set up for what we want in our golfers this week.

Im is a good fit for more technical layouts, not just because he is a former winner at Honda, but also because of how his game is built. He’s always had success during the Florida swing, so these Carolina Bermuda greens will be a welcome sight for Im. He has gained off the tee in five straight events, and that is step 1 when looking at what golfers have to do here to compete. Of course, at 110-1 it’s going to take a mammoth effort, but I am taking a flier and will add Im to the top-40, top-20, top-10 markets.

PGA US Open Pick: Sungjae Im (110-1 at FanDuel)
