PGA Wells Fargo Championship Odds, Picks & Betting Predictions (2024)

The second major of the year is rapidly approaching on the golf calendar, but before we dive into the PGA Championship, there’s an elevated event to tackle with the Wells Fargo Championship. Although it may not rise to the level of the majors, this is a star-studded field at a venue in Quail Hollow that’s been a staple of the PGA Tour season for many years. Almost all of the tour’s best are ready to tee it up, looking for some quality form before they turn their attention to another major. For betting purposes, there is a lot to break down, with big names tackling a difficult but fair layout, which gives us a lot of potential when building out the betting card. Let’s dive into the PGA best bets for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship

Quail Hollow is a beast, measuring out over 7,500 yards on a par-71 layout, so being able to get it out there with the driver is a factor this week — past history has confirmed that. It’s not purely spray and pray, but I prefer some strong off-tee numbers when looking to find some potential winners. Overall, if a golfer wants to beat this field and score on this course, they are going to need the entire game to cooperate, similar to a major mentality.

In terms of the field, it is a non-cut that brings the majority of the entire top 50, led by Rory McIlroy at around 6-1. From there, it’s most of the familiar names that we see at the top of the boards, with one glaring omission. Not having Scottie Scheffler changes the entire dynamic of the tournament and the odds board. The big positive, of course, is even he isn’t good enough to win when he’s not in the field, but every single price is impacted without him leading off the outright market. Here are a few of the best Wells Fargo Championship bets this week.

PGA Outright Pick #1: Xander Schauffele

Obviously, based on what Quail Hollow demands and who’s conquered that in the past, McIlroy is at the top of any list. And if you wanted to go there, the price is not unreasonable. However, Xander Schauffele is right there with him, and 9-1 is a number I can get behind. Normally I am pretty hesitant to go below 10-1 for a golfer in the outright market, but this is a spot to get some Schauffele exposure.

Again, the ability to drive the ball is key here, and Schauffele can lean on that. He is consistently one of the best in strokes gained off the tee and used that heavily in 2023 here when he finished second. Schauffele’s form seems to be in great shape, with four straight top-20 showings and three of those inside the top 10. If he continues to really gain strokes across the board, I don’t see how he stays out of contention this year. He will be a popular PGA Championship pick, but I am taking the plunge and backing him as one of the rightful favorites this week. Here is another option if you don’t want to go for a short-priced outright: Schauffele is +100 for a top-10, which is another appealing price.

PGA Outright Pick #2: Cameron Young

Cameron Young is in a large and ever-growing bucket of young talent on the PGA Tour, and he’s already proven he can contend in these fields. He has a handful of top=10 finishes in 2024, including an eighth at The Masters. Last time out at RBC Heritage, Young did not play well, but that doesn’t worry me at all given how much different this layout is from Harbour Town.

Young is the type of golfer who can succeed at Quail Hollow, and 25-1 is a good number. Like with most golfers, Young’s putter is going to have to cooperate for him to actually contend, but that’s a bet worth making. Plus, one of the best comparisons to Quail Hollow is Riviera, where Young finished 16th this year with 7.5 strokes gained ball striking.

PGA Wells Fargo Championship Pick: Cameron Young (25-1, FanDuel)

PGA Outright Pick #3: Byeong Hun An

Sorry to state the obvious: The goal of an outright bet is to actually win the tournament, so it’s always a little difficult clicking a guy without a win on his resume. An has been close numerous times, and even last week he finished fourth. The key for him and most golfers is syncing that ball striking with his putter, as it takes a full 72-hole effort to win an event like this. Last week An’s putter was an asset instead of a liability, and the hope is that he can recreate that at a venue where he’s struggled in the past with the flat stick.

A small-field non-cut with elite names is always difficult to break down because of the push and pull of it. Fewer golfers in the field and the lack of a cut help any golfer while driving the number down, and the strong field, of course, makes winning that much harder and pushes the number up. Ultimately, I am comfortable backing An in the 40-1 range in these events, as there is too much data that proves he can get into the mix. Wins seem to elude him, but like Taylor Pendrith managed last week, An will eventually hoist a trophy.

PGA Wells Fargo Championship Pick: Byeong Hun An (40-1, FanDuel)
