Sony Open Picks and Predictions: Corey Conners at 25-1?

The PGA tour season is underway and after a non-cut small field last week we are ready to get things fully started. The Sony Open is here and that means cut sweats, a full 144 man field and plenty of golfers to sort thru for our betting card. We head to a familiar venue at Waialae Country Club, but don’t be fooled thinking this will resemble much of what we saw last week. Nonetheless, onto our Sony Open picks, predictions and more.

Despite both courses being in Hawaii, this layout will certainly not allow the 400+ yard bombers paradise The Sentry offered. From a betting standpoint a full field makes it much harder to find an outright, but the reward is massive with the odds wide open. Lets dive into the field, and betting board for a few names that stick out this week.

Sony Open Picks: Corey Conners 25-1 Outright: DraftKings

It’s not a perfect recipe for success, but if I could choose I’d want my golfer this week to have played last week at The Sentry and have plenty of experience at Sony. We’ve seen time and time again early season reps work wonders coming into Sony and it’s a course where players tend to have repeat success. Fortunately for us, Corey Conners checks both those boxes, and we are getting a respectable number in the outright market.

Conners finished an uneventful 33rd last week but more importantly than the finish was just the fact he played. Then digging into the numbers, we see a massive seven strokes lost on the greens which is an easy explanation for the lack of upside last week. His game translates well to this layout and the result he has prove that.

Conners finished 3rd in 2019 and has four straight Top 15’s here at Waialae, which is exactly what we want to see in our outright selections. I feel confident the ball striking will be here and if the putter flips this is a guy who has real win equity in this field.

Sony Open Predictions: Byeong Hun An 33-1 Outright: FanDuel

If you’ve been with me in years past then you know its my life mission to cash the elusive Byeong Hun An outright ticket. Now on one hand its always frustrating backing a player who seems to be so close without ever knocking down that door, but on the other hand it truly seems like An is poised to content in these early season events.

We saw Benny last week at Sentry and he brought his game with him pouring in putts which is a rarity. Now on one hand we can say that’s an outlier, but if he’s found anything with the short game that’s the missing piece to his game. We know the driving and around the green game remain strong so it’s a matter of can we keep the hot putter.

Adding to the intrigue was last year at the Sony we saw An once again on fire with the putter gaining nearly seven strokes with the flatstick. Certainly, a result like that could be randomness, but if he does like these surface in Hawaii then this sets up nicely coming off his showing last week.

Sony Open Picks: Adam Svensson 45-1 Outright: FanDuel

Here’s a player who broke thru in late 2022 to win on the PGA Tour and who im looking to buy at the start of the 2024 season. Svensson was another guy who played last week and finished 33rd with average stats across the board. He does have a Top 10 finish in 2022 here at The Sony, but more important than that I think this course suits his game. His lone tour victory came at RSM, and we’ve seen some other easier, technical layouts be some of his best stops on tour.

Im currently projecting this to play easy with calm conditions both of which are ideal for backing the Canadian here. If the weather picks up that’s something to monitor, but I view Svensson as another guy with serious win equity if he gets it rolling. Off last week he will need to flip a switch but 45-1 in this field was good enough to make my betting card.
