Best Women’s World Cup Bets: Colombia-Jamaica & France-Morocco Predictions

The 2023 Women’s World Cup Round of 16 wraps up on Tuesday with a two-game slate featuring Colombia-Jamaica and France-Morocco. Before the tournament started, many would have thought that Germany and South Korea would have been in the spots of Colombia and Morocco. Nonetheless, the latter nations finished in first and second place in Group H, respectively, with two wins apiece. Colombia will play 43rd-ranked Jamaica, which will be a difficult game despite their 18-spot difference in rank. Jamaica was the only team not to concede in the group stages and can be frustrating to play against. Conversely, debutant and 72nd-ranked Morocco has the unfortunate draw of playing France in the first knockout round. While it is never wise to disqualify a team too early, this is an almost inconceivable challenge for Morocco. Best Colombia-Jamaica Picks

This is one of the few matches at this tournament where both teams have plus moneyline odds. Colombia is the slight frontrunner at +105, with -180 odds to advance, which is fair considering how this match will play out.

The most likely scenario is that Jamaica defends with all its might and tries to push this match to penalty kicks. As a team that has scored one goal — against Panama of all teams — and collected an expected goal tally of 1.4 in three matches, it simply cannot get into a scoring duel.

Colombia has great scorers and creators like Linda Caicedo, Mayra Ramirez and Catalina Usme. While Jamaica has Bunny Shaw, who is a superstar in her own right, she has practically no support. If she cannot get high-quality service, then her presence on the field will be underwhelming. The point is that, as this match goes deeper into the time clock, Colombia has more talent to call on, especially up front. Even if Jamaica can hold on for penalties, Colombia has the talent to go through eventually.

This will certainly be a quiet match on the goal front too. Five of these teams’ six combined matches at the World Cup fell under the 2.5-goal threshold, with only one team scoring. Moreover, with Jamaica’s four clean sheets in a row, Colombia will have to work for any offense it creates.

Regardless, the draw is an obvious play for regular time. At +200, it is not the most valuable play on the board, but it feels so likely. On top of that, betting the under on 1.5 goals at +150 is a super-value play. It has hit in 66% of its combined matches so far and provides a hedging opportunity should this finish 1-0 to either team.

Best France-Morocco Picks

This match is a David and Goliath contest between the fifth- and 72nd-ranked teams in women’s soccer. Despite a 6-0 defeat to Germany on the first day, Morocco somehow has advanced to its first ever World Cup knockout match. It did so by going back to what it is good at: Actually playing defense. In fact, it saw out 1-0 victories over Colombia and South Korea, which was enough to put it through.

Those performances are more similar to the Morocco from before the World Cup started. Much like the men’s team, this team revolves around defense; even before the World Cup, it managed to hold clean sheets against European teams like Italy and Switzerland. Its 6-0 defeat was blown out of proportion a little bit too, as Germany was  only expected to score 2.4 goals, showing how ruthless it was on that first day.

While France is also in that upper echelon of women’s soccer talent, with rising stars like Wendie Renard and Kadidiatou Diani, this match leans towards a tighter margin. Remember, France was held silent by Jamaica, who defensively is very similar to Morocco. France will win, but Morocco can hold it to two goals or less. This play has -105 odds, which is pretty solid given the defensive form and the likelihood Morocco also pushes for a draw.

Final Best France-Morocco Picks: France Under 2.5 Goals (-105, DraftKings)
