Best Women’s World Cup Bets: USA-Netherlands Predictions and Odds (July 26)

On Wednesday evening, the United States and Netherlands meet in a rematch of the 2019 Women’s World Cup Final. The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) was obviously victorious in that final, thanks to memorable goals from Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle. Now the stakes are considerably lower as the countries meet in the second match of the group stage. Currently, the teams are respective leaders of Group E, with 3 points apiece and both well on their way to knockout qualification. While the Netherlands will still be one of its harder group stage games in recent memory, this is a matchup the USWNT has fared quite well in over the years, with a record of 8-1-1 over 10 matches. The runner-up in Group E will most likely have to go on to play Sweden in the Round of 16, so it is definitely favorable to win this match and pull strongly into first place. Regardless, let’s jump right into USA-Netherlands predictions and bets for the second game at the Australia-New Zealand World Cup.

USA-Netherlands Prediction

In the late hours after USA-Vietnam on Friday, many people had questions about the USWNT’s performance. A 3-0 result at the World Cup is nothing to shake a stick at, but the USWNT has built themselves up to a point where a huge target is on its back. Even as the women’s sport grows and evolves, spectators will always ask, why did the U.S. not score more? What happens when the competition gets more difficult? Vietnam did not even have a touch in the USWNT penalty box, so is it even possible to know if the absence of Becky Sauerbrunn matters? These are all valid questions, some of which may even become more realistic as this tournament marches on.

Nonetheless, it is time to just ride out what Vlatko Andonovski has put together, at least until the semifinals. There is valid reason to put a lot of weight into the USWNT’s three-game losing streak last fall, where it lost consecutively to England, Spain and Germany. The bigger takeaway here is how quickly and calmly it responded, rattling off 10 wins in row, including victories against Germany, Canada, Japan and Brazil. Not to mention, it has only conceded two goals over that same span. Looking into now, it has a certified star in Sophia Smith up front, who can be its top scorer at this tournament. Even if the shooting boots of Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe need dusting off, this team has youth and hidden gems yet to have their moment on the World Cup stage.

The point is, stop being so reactionary with this team. So what if it only scored three against Vietnam? Only three teams scored more than that in their first matches, and they were playing the 52nd-, 72nd- and 77th-ranked teams in the world.

In regard to the Netherlands, it is a very good team and absolutely not one to be discounted. Vivianne Miedema is honestly a big miss for them up top, and her output is hard to replicate or replace. However, the Netherlands is still a threat aerially and can be quite physical, something the USWNT struggled with against Vietnam. It is going to be a massive 90 minutes for Naomi Girma, who is slated to start at left center-half.

Finally, from a betting perspective, the USA clean sheet is a strong play given the team’s recent defensive performances. It has also held clean sheets in eight of its last 10 group-stage matches at the World Cup, so this play is undervalued at +105. On top of that, continue to back Sophia Smith until she fails; Smith to score a brace hit against Vietnam, so it is only right to let it ride and see if she can score at least once more.

Final USA-Netherlands Prediction: USA Clean Sheet (+105, DraftKings)

Sophia Smith to Score (+170, DraftKings)
